The El Salvador national team booked their ticket in the group stage of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament earlier this year and have been playing exhibition matches to prepare for the event. ‘La Selecta’ have failed to win any their last three warm-up games, but feel confident with the experience gained ahead of the tournament that starts on 10 July.

One goal in three games

On Sunday, El Salvador lost 1-0 against Qatar at the Stadion Aldo Drosina in their final preparation match. The CONCACAF side couldn’t take advantage of playing against 10 men for much of the game after Abdulaziz Hatem saw red in the 20th minute. Qatar did their job and in the 69th minute Almoez Ali scored the winning goal.

“After Qatar’s red card we didn’t take advantage of having one more player on the field. We couldn’t open up the game and we were not aggressive enough. At the end we made a mistake and they hurt us on the counter attack,” said El Salvador’s manager, Hugo Carrillo, after the game.

El Salvador started their Gold Cup preparation with a scoreless draw against Guatemala on 26 June at the Banc of California stadium. They then traveled to Europe to play against Croatian side NK Istra 1961 and lost 2-1. The El Salvador national team will have to turn the page quickly because they make their debut in the Gold Cup on 10 July against Curaçao in Group A.
