Álex Roldán scores on El Salvador international debut

Álex Róldan was born in the United States but his father is from Guatemala and his mother from El Salvador, so he was eligible to play for any of the three national teams. In May it was reported that he declined the invitation to play for Guatemala and in June he agreed to represent El Salvador at international level.

Dream debut for Roldán

The coach of La Selecta Hugo Pérez included the Seattle Sounders player in the roster that was going to participate in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign. El Salvador made their debut against, curiously, Guatemala on Sunday night and took victory at the Toyota Stadium.

Roldán came on in the 65th minute replacing Darwin Cerén and he made an immediate impact on the pitch. This was his international debut for El Salvador and Roldán scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to give his team the lead.

We all dream about debuting with a goal and it happened tonight [Sunday]. The coach [Hugo Pérez] has been preparing us for the tough games we have ahead and against Guatemala was one of them. They had a solid back line, but we were able to win and now we have to prepare for the games against Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico,” said Roldán after the game.

The 24-year-old midfielder hit a low shot from outside the box to beat Guatemala’s goalkeeper, Nicholas Hagen. With the late lead obtained, El Salvador was able to control the game and in the 81st minute Joaquín Rivas made it 2-0 to give his team the victory and all three points.

With this win La Selecta climbs up to first place in Group A, while Mexico and the Soca Warriors have one point each. The next game for El Salvador will be against Trinidad and Tobago on 14 July at the Toyota stadium.
