Richard Sherman pleaded not guilty to five misdemeanor charges in a Seattle court on Friday after being arrested in Redmond, Washington earlier this week.

Sherman has been charged with second-degree criminal trespass, reckless endangerment of roadway crews, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and third-degree malicious mischief. The charges come after the 33-year-old NFL star crashed his car into a construction barrier and attempted to break into his in-laws’ house on Wednesday.

“I used pepper spray on Sherman’s face through the partially opened door as he was still banging and attempting to gain entry,” his father-in-law, Raymond Moss, told police.

“I told him to stop,” Moss added. “I armed myself with my handgun at this time fearing for the safety of myself and my family.”

Sherman is alleged to have fought with police outside the home before he was apprehended and transported to hospital. No residents were injured.

Sherman “deeply remorseful”

Sherman, who appeared in court along with his wife, said he was “deeply remorseful” for his actions and pledged he would seek help for mental health issues.

"I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted,” he stated.

“The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need,” Sherman added. “I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle.

“I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time."

NFL News:

Sherman free agent

Sherman is currently a free agent following his departure from the San Francisco 49ers after three seasons. A three-time first-team All-Pro and a Super Bowl XLVIII champion with the Seattle Seahawks, Sherman is a vice-president of the NFL Players Association's (NFLPA) executive committee. It is unknown if the charges will affect his role at the NFLPA.
