COMMENT

The Milwaukee Bucks are Champions of the NBA for the first time in 50 years after defeating the Phoenix Suns 105-98. Giannis Antetokounmpo was named Finals MVP and capped his season off with one of the most memorable performances in NBA Finals history to seal the Game 6 win and give Milwaukee it’s second title in franchise history.

Downtown Milwaukee was rocking for Game 6

There were nearly 80,000 fans inside and outside of the Fiserv Forum to witness history as the Bucks narrowly edged the Phoenix Suns. The regular season’s top offensive team did it yet again with defense to clinch the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

After finding themselves in an 0-2 for the second time this postseason, the Milwaukee Bucks responded by winning four straight to take the title on their home court.

It was almost an exact role reversal for both sides from Game 5 to Game 6. Saturday in Arizona the Suns jumped out to a double digit lead, but the advantage was short lived as the Milwaukee erased the lead quickly in the second quarter.

A tale of two quarters in the opening half

Both teams got off to sloppy starts as nerves rose to the surface in the opening quarter. Phoenix started the game going 1/8 from the field and scored just 16 points in the first quarter, while the Bucks struggled to hang on to possession, turning the ball over seven times in the first 12 minutes.

An 11-2 run gave the Milwaukee a 13 point lead going into the second quarter, but the Suns dwindled the lead down to 3, scoring ten straight points out of the quarter change. It took just 6 minutes to draw level with the Bucks, and Phoenix took a five point lead into the halftime break after outscoring the Bucks 31-13.

Giannis exploes in third quarter

Giannis went into hero mode coming out of the locker room, scoring 20 points in the third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter the Greek had 37 of Milwaukee’s 77 points.

Antetokounmpo was not just sensational from the field, but also hit 17 of 19 free throws, many of which came late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win and the title for the title starved city. The Greek saved the best for last in a post season run that will gave so many incredible performances. Giannis finished the game with 50 points, becoming just the seventh player in NBA history to score 50 in a finals game.

Bucks defense buckles down late

The game was tied going into the fourth quarter but the Bucks, on the chiseled shoulders of Antetokounmpo, took the lead early and would not let it go. At the end of the game we saw what we have seen throughout the entire playoffs from the champions. The leagues best offensive side clamp down on defense and Khris Middleton stepping up with some clutch baskets in vital moments.

Middleton Mr. Clutch for Milwaukee

Middleton ended the game with 17 points, but the timing of his baskets is what made the difference for the Bucks down the stretch.  Bobby Portis had another highly energetic night as he fueled the Fiserv Forum crowd with his defense and dropped 16 points off the bench.

Chris Paul led the Suns with 26 points, and Devin Booker came to life in the second half after scoring just 4 points in the opening quarters. The Suns were frustrated by the Bucks defense late on as Milwaukee turned up the pressure and disrupted the offensive flow of Paul and Phoenix.

The Suns were able to close the gap to four with just over 90 seconds to go in the game, but Middleton hit the shot of the night fading away off a ball screen to seal the game for Milwaukee.
