No plans to reschedule more events as storm approaches Japan

Tokyo Olympic organisers are not planning to reschedule more events for the Games, they said on Monday, as tropical storm Nepartak churned toward Japan's main island.

Tuesday's rowing races were rescheduled for later in the week, while Monday's events were move to Sunday in anticipation of the storm.

"At this time there are no plans to change the schedule for any of the other events due to be held on Tuesday," Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya told reporters.

The likely wind and rain will follow intense heat, which has caused one Olympic archers to collapse and had skateboarders complaining of unbearable conditions by 9 a.m.

The rain also threatens Tuesday's two medal games for softball. Canada, vying for bronze, said their flights home are scheduled for Wednesday with the next available potentially not until Saturday because the pandemic has limited options.

But their accommodation need to be taken over by newly arriving athletes sooner.

"We very much hope the game goes on tomorrow," coach Mark Smith said. "We don't have a lot of flexibility."

South Korean TV network chief apologises amid furore over Olympic broadcast blunders

The head of a South Korean public TV network which sparked a furore for using offensive images and captions during the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony issued a public apology on Monday, saying its "inconsiderate" broadcast violated the Olympic spirit.

The network, MBC, has apologised for using photos of Dracula to introduce Romania, the Chernobyl power plant for Ukraine and a riot for Haiti when athletes from the countries marched into the stadium for the ceremony.

Another controversy erupted during a men's soccer match between South Korea and Romania late on Sunday for displaying a subtitle saying "Thank you Marin," referring to Romanian captain Rajvan Marin whose attempt to deflect the ball ended up in his own net.

Park Sung-jae, chief executive of MBC, held a rare news conference on Monday to apologise for the mishaps. "Our broadcast violated the Olympic spirits of friendship, solidarity and unity in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic," Park said.

"I deeply apologise for our indiscriminate broadcasts, which lacked consideration for other countries."

Tom Daley speaks out after winning gold

Tom Daley secured a Tokyo 2020 gold earlier on Day 3 and availed of the press conference to speak out on his pride about being a LGBT Olympian.

After picking up his first-ever Olympic gold, with a stunning upset over China in the men's 10 metre synchronised platform dive with team mate Matty Lee, the 27-year-old said he and other LGBTQ athletes could improve the lives of kids who feel "frightened and scared and alone."

"When I was a little boy and felt like an outsider and felt different and felt like I was never going to be anything because who I was wasn't what society wanted me to be, and to be able to see out LGBT people performing at the Olympic Games is – I hope (it) can give young kids hope," he told reporters.

Men's volleyball

The final live event of the day is a South American clash between Argentina and Brazil with the Argentine side taking a 2 sets to nil lead.

Osaka taking it "one notch at a time" after beating Golubic

After producing another convincing win in the Olympic women's singles tennis tournament today, Japan's Naomi Osaka said she's taking things "one notch at a time" at Tokyo 2020.

With Ash Barty having suffered a shock exit a day prior, Osaka is now the favourite for glory on home court and with Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek among the round-two casualties that status is sure to only be enhanced.

Here's what she had to say.

The Republic of Korea have again proven their power, although Chinese Taipei gave a very good showing at the men's team archery finals held at Yumenoshima Park today.

Teen archer KIM Je Deok, KIM Woojin and OH Jinhyek dominated the field with six points, bringing the Chinese Taipei team - led by DENG Yu-Cheng, TANG Chih-Chun and WEI Chun-Heng - to fold to second place without having made any points in the competition.

Four of the last five Olympic titles have been won by Republic of Korea. Since 2000, only Italy in London 2012 broke their winning streak.

Meanwhile FURUKAWA Takaharu, KAWATA Yuki and MUTO Hiroki led Team Japan for an upset victory to win the bronze medal match against the Netherlands.

Ledecky and Titmus to face off

Katie Ledecky can become a six-times Olympic gold medallist on Monday if the American wins her long-awaited 400m freestyle showdown with Australia's world champion Ariarne Titmus.

The big duel of the Tokyo pool will be one highlight of a morning that is also likely to see Adam Peaty take the 100m breaststroke gold and make history as the first British swimmer to defend an Olympic title.

"It’s going to be a great race with Ariarne. I’m really excited to be in that first final tomorrow," said Ledecky, who won four of her golds in Rio in 2016 and the other in London in 2012.

The American is the defending 400m champion and world record holder and goes into the final with the fastest time from the heats.

Zolotic hopes gold win will give taekwondo a lift in US

US gold medallist for women's taekwondo Anastasija Zolotic said on Sunday she hoped her historic win would give taekwondo a boost in her home country, where other combat sports have had a bigger following than the Korean martial art form.

In a surprise result, the 18-year-old won the Unites States' first gold medal since taekwondo became a full-medal Olympic sport in 2000.

Asked whether there was room for another combat sport in a country with a greater affection for boxing and mixed martial arts, Zolotic said: "There better be. I work my butt off for it, and I hope taekwondo (becomes) as popular as it can be in the US

"Hopefully in 2024 if I make it over there and win another gold medal and just keep grinding to LA, by then taekwondo will be all over the map," she said, referring to the next Summer Games in Paris in three years and Los Angeles in 2028.

While taekwondo has 80 million practitioners around the world, it has struggled to gain traction in the United States, while past allegations of sexual misconduct against women have also hurt its reputation.

"Hopefully (my win) will give it a better image than it has and bring it back up to where USA taekwondo deserves to be - one of the best sports that you can watch," she said.

Olympic Games Day 3: welcome

Hello and a very warm welcome to you as we gear up for Day 3 of competition in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Day 2 provided plenty of medal action with China leading the table after landing a total of six golds. Japan enjoyed a profitable day on Sunday, moving up to five golds to lead from the US, who are in third place with four golds.

Day 3 features 21 medal events and Japan will be hopeful of more success in judo and skateboarding. In the pool Great Britain’s Adam Peaty is looking to defend his Rio gold and few would bet against the 100m breaststroke champion breaking his own world record yet again. US superstar Katie Ledecky will also be in action as she faces a new challenger to her Olympic throne in Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who beat Ledecky in the 400m freestyle final at the 2019 World Championships. The two will go head-to-head again over the same distance for Olympic glory.
