Changing attitudes: From Daley Thompson to Tom Daley

Hearing Daley’s words - and as proof that the world does generally move in the right direction - I recalled a T-shirt worn by another Briton, a man with a very similar name, the prodigious decathlete Daley Thompson, in 1984. "Is the world's 2nd greatest athlete gay?" it read.

Things have moved on a bit since then, but not as much as we'd like...

Tokyo daily covid-19 cases top 3,000 for first time

Covid cases continue to rise in Tokyo, where the Olympics is into its fifth day of competition.

Tokyo recorded over 3,000 daily coronavirus cases for the first time, less than a week after the Olympic Games began.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government recorded 3,177 cases of covid-19, a record number in a single day just 24 hours on from the 2,848 on Tuesday, which represented the previous high.

Japan's capital remains under a state of emergency while the Games take place. Another 16 Olympics-related cases were announced by Tokyo 2020 organisers on Wednesday, taking the total to 169.

USA played with freedom in bounce-back Iran victory – Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant said United States' confidence-boosting victory against Iran at the Tokyo Olympics was down to playing with freedom and becoming more selfish.

Team USA's 25-game winning run in the men's basketball at the Games was ended by France last week but they responded with a 120-66 victory against Iran on Wednesday.

That loss to France followed exhibition defeats to Australia and Nigeria in the build-up to the event, leading to questions over the cohesion of the record 15-time gold medalists.

Simone Biles will not participate in women's all-around final

USA Gymnastics confirmed to Tokyo 2020 that six-time Olympic medallist Simone Biles will not participate in Thursday's (29 July) women's all-around final.

"After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health," read a statement from the governing body. "Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals. Jade Carey, who had the ninth highest score in qualifications, will participate in her place in the all-around."

"We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many," the statement concluded.

Volleyball: U.S. down China as world champions Serbia beat Japan

The United States dealt China a second consecutive straight sets defeat in women's volleyball on Tuesday to leave the defending Olympic champions in danger of missing out on the knockout stages.

The Americans, bronze medallists at Rio in 2016, have won five Olympic medals in the event but never gold. Their 29-27 25-22 25-21 victory moved them to the top of Pool B without dropping a set, having beaten Argentina in their opener.

Jordan Thompson, the Americans' 24-year-old opposite hitter who is competing in her first Games, impressed again, top-scoring with 34 points to set a Tokyo 2020 record.

"We wanted to serve tough and stick with a solid block setup. We tried to have a short memory when we made mistakes or China made a great kill," Thompson, who also made four blocks and hit two aces, said.

"China is a legendary team with some of the best players in the world. They pushed us, they'll be back."

China, who were stunned in straight sets by Turkey in their first match, are fifth in Pool B without a point. Only the top four qualify for the quarter-finals.

Katie Ledecky going for two golds in the pool today, starting with a showdown with rival Ariarne Titmus of Australia.

The 200m freestyle race is expected to be tight, but Ledecky of Team USA is the clear favorite to win the 1500m.

Cycling: History-chasing Ganna is rider to beat in time trial showpiece

World champion Filippo Ganna has swept the majority of individual time trials in the past few seasons but only an Olympic gold in Wednesday's event can cement his place among the all-time great sprint specialists.

The Italian rider has an opportunity to join Spain's Miguel Indurain and Swiss Fabian Cancellara as an Olympic gold medallist in the time trial while still in possession of the world crown in the event.

Ganna, nicknamed 'La Bestia' - the beast - did not make the cut for Italy's Rio 2016 lineup, but has since picked up 10 professional time trial wins - including the 2020 world title on home soil and five Giro d'Italia stages.

Competing three days after his 25th birthday, Ganna cannot expect plain sailing when he rolls down the ramp at the Fuji International Speedway.

In the face of her shocking withdrawal from the gymnastic team finals, Simone Biles congratulates her teammates for bagging the silver.

She thanks them for stepping up when she couldn't and for having her back.

Five man Argentina stun South Africa

Argentina lost the experienced Gaston Revol to an early red card against South Africa, but battled on with six men to lead 14-7 at the break as the electric Marcos Moneta bagged a brace of tries.

They held on despite finishing the game with five players after a late yellow card.

"We had a tough match, but we demonstrated what a team is. We thought of every little thing that we have left behind to be here, we are missing our families and friends, and with the pandemic it has been all the more difficult," Moneta said.

Dominant Duffy wins famous gold for Bermuda

Flora Duffy achieved instant national hero status when she won Bermuda’s first Olympic gold medal on Tuesday after delivering a dominant run leg for an emphatic victory in the women's triathlon on a stormy Tokyo course.

Duffy, 33, was part of a group of seven who broke clear at the start of the 40km bike but then stamped her authority on the race with a fantastic performance over the 10km run to finish in one hour, 55.36 minutes.

Georgia Taylor-Brown overcame a flat tyre near the end of the bike leg to chase back strongly and finish second, 74 seconds behind, bagging another silver for Britain after Alex Yee's in the men's race on Monday.

Katie Zaferes, world champion in 2019, won bronze for the United States to fully justify her discretionary selection after struggling for form.

The victory, in her fourth Olympics, caps a wonderful career for Duffy, as she becomes her country's second Olympic medallist after Clarence Hill took a heavyweight boxing bronze in 1976.

Biles

Biles says gymnastics not everything, 'we also have to focus on ourselves'

In the end, Simone Biles decided to pull out of the Tokyo 2020 team gymnastics finals on Tuesday because things just did not feel right after her vault, saying mental health is more important than sports.

Biles, who wrote on her Instagram just a day before about feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders, decided that rather than risk injury - and a medal for the rest of the team - she needed to just stop.

"It's like fighting all those demons and coming out here. I have to put my pride aside. I have to do it for the team," she told reporters after the team competition, in which her teammates stepped up and took silver, one member only having a brief time to warm up before her routine.

"And then at the end of the day, it's like 'you know what, I have to do what is right for me and focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and my well-being,'" she said.

Olympic Games Day 5: welcome

Hello and a very warm welcome to you as we gear up for Day 5 of competition in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Day 4 provided plenty of drama with US gymnast Simone Biles pulling out of the team final but she hopes to participate in the individual events. Host nation Japan maintain their grip on top of the overall medal table after winning a total of ten golds. The USA are in second place tied with China both with 9 gold medals.

Day 5 features 23 medal events and Japan and the US will be hopeful of more success in the swimming pool and TEAM USA men's basketball will be looking to bounce back from the opening loss as they face Iran.
