ROC's Karen Khachanov saw off Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta with a comprehensive 6-3 6-3 win in today's semi-final. The 25-year-old, who made the Wimbledon quarter-final this month, outgunned the Spaniard - ranked 14 places higher at number 11 - in one hour and 19 minutes on Center Court.

"I play tennis for these moments, I practice for these kind of matches and you know, when you get there, when it's paying off, it's just a pure pleasure to be here," Khachanov said. "These are the kinds of memories that will stay forever."

Khachanov will play fifth-ranked Alexander Zverev in the gold medal match at Ariake Tennis Park on Sunday.

Who is Jade Carey, the US gymnast replacing Simone Biles at the Olympics?

USA Gymnastics confirmed in a statement that Simone Biles had pulled out of Thursday’s all-round event at the Tokyo Olympics “to focus on her mental health.” At the same time it was confirmed that Jade Carey will take her place.

Hong Kong's Haughey bags 'bonus' silver

Hong Kong had to wait nearly 70 years to get its first Olympic swimming medal but its second came only two days later after Siobhan Haughey secured her second silver of the Tokyo Games in the 100m freestyle final on Friday.

The 23-year-old psychology major had already made history for Hong Kong by reaching an Olympic swimming final, finishing second in the 200m on Wednesday.

On Friday she swam the 100m free in 52.27 seconds, just 0.31 seconds behind Australian winner Emma McKeon.

Haughey said her main focus had been the 200 so bringing home a medal in the shorter race was "a bonus".

"All I wanted to do today was to have fun. The fact that I came away with another medal again, it is so surreal," she said.

The 200m freestyle is always my main event, so this is just a bonus."

Residents of Hong Kong, which first competed at the Olympics as a British colony in 1952, have closely followed Haughey's progress at the Games and after celebrating her historic swim earlier in the week many gathered on Friday morning hoping she would give them more reason to celebrate.

Hundreds watched in shopping malls, which were streaming the race live, and others in bars and restaurants to view the final. Youth swimming groups had set up screenings at their training facilities.

At one shopping mall in the city's Kowloon district, some residents burst into tears after her performance, local media showed. Many said it provided a sense of camaraderie after the widespread protests in 2019.

"I want to celebrate the moment with all the Hongkongers. It's really amazing because she made new history of Hong Kong," said student Joey, according to public broadcaster RTHK. Haughey, whose mum is from Hong Kong and father is Irish, will also race in the 50m freestyle heats on Friday night.

China medal rush in badminton

Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping took gold in an all-China mixed doubles final with compatriots Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong picking up silver.

"Pressure is a privilege" - Djokovic on Biles and Osaka

Novak Djokovic defeated hometown favorite Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals to advance to the next round of the tennis Olympic tournament. The Serbian player is in search of the “Golden Slam” and he was asked about athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka suffering from mental health issues.

World discus champ Stahl bags finals spot with just one throw

Sweden's world champion Daniel Stahl needed just one attempt to qualify for the men's discus final as track events got underway on Friday.

Stahl, 28, has finished as world leader in each season since 2016 and arrived in Tokyo with a season-leading throw of 71.40 metres and with three of the four longest throws of 2021.

His opening throw on Friday came at 66.12m and it was enough to move him past the qualification mark for Saturday's final.

"It was a relaxed throw. My goal was to make the finals so I did it," Stahl said. "My goal was to just make what was needed for the final and I did it so I'm very happy."

Two remote-controlled miniature buses ferried the discus across the field under overcast conditions at the mostly-empty Olympic Stadium as the first day of competition in athletics kicked off at the Tokyo Games.

Lithuanian Andrius Gudzius, the 2017 world champion, came in second at 65.94 while Slovenian medal hope Kristjan Ceh, who is second behind Stahl in the 2021 leaders' list, came third overall with a throw of 65.45.

Simone Biles speaks out

The US star gymnast, who pulled out of the both the team and individual finals, has explained her decision.

"I don't think you realise how dangerous this is on a hard/competitive surface," she wrote. "Nor do I have to explain why I put my health first. Physical health is mental health."

Badminton

Badminton athletes have begun to battle for medals in Tokyo; and with recent upsets, the finals can be anybody’s game.

Matches over the past week have been a saga of upsets and near-upsets, attributable to a large extent to the exceptional conditions wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Missed and canceled international tournaments due to the pandemic have cut the number of points players accumulated, kept them from scoping out the competition, and given younger, unknown players extra time to catch up to their heroes.

"The ranking list has been in an emergency state due to COVID," said Steen Pedersen, Danish former national head coach. "They're uncertain where their opponents stand."

One of the biggest upsets in badminton history took place on Wednesday when men's singles world number one Kento Momota was demolished by a player 37 ranks below him. A day later, the top men's pair Indonesia's Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo were knocked out in the quarter-finals, as were women's doubles number one team Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota.

Olympic Village

A Tale of Two Cities: In the Olympic 'bubble' and the Tokyo outside

The Tokyo Olympics is running a village for athletes and coaches where more than 80% are vaccinated against the coronavirus, testing is compulsory and movement is stringently curtailed.

None of that is true for the giant Japanese capital that surrounds the Olympic "bubble".

The athletes’ village and Olympic press center represent a huge, strict COVID-19 control zone for the more than 50,000 competitors, coaches, staff and journalists. Meanwhile, outside the fence, host city Tokyo - despite laboring through its fourth coronavirus lockdown as infections spike to record highs - is leading something like life as pandemic-normal.

Participants traveling to the Olympics are tested for the coronavirus before boarding their flights, upon arrival and regularly after that. Organizers have administered nearly 275,000 tests, with athletes screened daily and journalists tested before events and every four days in the press center.

Newly-minted Olympic gold medalist Sunisa Lee sends her love to all those who have cheered her on.

One of the stand-out names of Day 6 was Sunisa Lee, who won gold in the women's all-around gymnastics final in the absence of Simone Biles, who had pulled out due to mental-health reasons.

Lee paid tribute to Biles after her triumph, telling reporters: "It sucks that I couldn’t have Simone on the floor with me, but just to have her in the arena was very helpful because she is an inspiration to me and someone I look up to."
