Swimming: El Salvador's Celina Márquez departs Olympics

El Salvador sent a total of five athletes to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and one of them was the 22-year-old swimmer Celina Márquez. She was competing in the women’s 200m backstroke heat, but failed to qualify for the final round on Wednesday.

“I am very happy and excited for the experience”

Márquez finished in 23rd place with a time of 2:14:72 in the backstroke competition, but only the first 16 advanced to the final round in search of a medal. She also participated in the 100m backstroke competition, but finished in 36th place with a time of 1:03:75.

“I am very happy and excited for the experience and to have the opportunity to be at the Olympic Games. I think it has been a difficult time for all of us [athletes] and I am happy for my compatriots participating. I enjoyed each moment and was just happy to be here,” said Márquez.

There are two athletes from El Salvador who have an opportunity to win a medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Marcelo Acosta will participate in the 1500m athletics races on Friday and Enrique Arathoon in the sailing competition.
