Lewis slates USA

American sprinting great Carl Lewis says the USA's failure to qualify for the men's 4x100m final is a "total embarrassment."

The world champions were favourites to win a first Olympics gold in the relay since 2000, however, their quartet of Trayvon Bromell, Fred Kerley, Ronnie Baker and Cravon Gillespie trailed home sixth, in a heat won by China.

In a post on Twitter, Lewis, said: "The USA team did everything wrong in the men's relay.

"The passing system is wrong, athletes running the wrong legs, and it was clear that there was no leadership. It was a total embarrassment, and completely unacceptable for a USA team to look worse than the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) kids I saw."

Tokyo Olympics: Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd earn bronze for USA in thriller

Megan Rapinoe scored direct from a corner as she and fellow United States veteran Carli Lloyd hit doubles to sink Australia 4-3 in the Olympic Games bronze medal game.

Australia's replies came from Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Emily Gielnik in the seven-goal feast at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium.

It was 36-year-old Rapinoe and 39-year-old Lloyd who stole the show, though, on what may prove to be farewell appearances for the superstar duo.

Whether they play on in the short term for the national team remains to be seen, but this was likely a final outing at the Olympics for both, and they went out in style.

Tokyo Olympics 2021: what is Megan Rapinoe's net worth?

A popular groundswell of support for Megan Rapinoe to run for US president after the USWNT triumphed at the 2019 World Cup, where she won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball, is an indication of the appeal of the OL Reign captain beyond the pitch. The 36-year-old USWNT star winger is a vocal advocate of LGBTQ rights and unafraid to speak her mind: during that 2019 campaign she entered into a social media war of words with then-White House incumbent Donald Trump and, perhaps unsurprisingly and despite online spats rarely producing winners, Rapinoe emerged with her reputation enhanced.

Biles thanks Japanese gym that helped her regain her form

Simone Biles on Wednesday thanked the Japanese gym she visited in secret to overcome a bout of "the twisties" that threatened to end her Olympic run in Tokyo before she battled back to win a bronze on the balance beam.

Biles spent several days out of the spotlight at the training facilities of Juntendo University where she was able to overcome the disorientation she was experiencing while performing her gravity-defying skills, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

"I'll forever be thankful for Juntendo for allowing me to come train separately to try to get my skills back," she wrote on Twitter.

"The Japanese are some of, if not the sweetest people I've ever met."

Juntendo is located in a suburb outside of Tokyo and there Biles was able to regain her confidence in privacy on the gym's soft mats and foam pits, the paper reported.

The 24-year-old American had come to Japan eyeing a record haul of six golds, but shocked the sports world when she pulled out of the opening event, the team competition, after just one vault.

She said she needed to prioritise her mental health and it appeared as if she would not return, but she staged a comeback to take the bronze in the final event on Tuesday.

Defending champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas cruised into the Olympic 400 metres final where she will face the woman she beat five years ago, Allyson Felix, who also progressed with a season's best race on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, she easily won her semi-final, clocking, 49.60 seconds. American Felix was second in her race, in 49.89.

Miller-Uibo said she was glad she had progressed despite battling injuries.
