What are the new Olympic sports for 2024 and which ones are dropping out?

Every Olympic edition we see new sports join the program. Rugby sevens joined the schedule for the first time in Rio 2016, while the Brazilian Olympics saw Golf returning as an Olympic sport after a 112-year absence. However, Rio nothing has to do with this summer’s Olympics, which have been the second Olympics with most implementation— 5 new events— after the 11 sports implemented on the 1920s.

Breakdancing to debut in Paris

IOC confirmed surf, climbing and skateboarding return for the French Games.

All three sports will return for in 2024, as well as the latest Summer Olympic program implementation breakdancing, or breaking, which will debut for the first time ever at the Olympics.

This new olympic sport joins the program as a decision to broaden the tournament’s appeal. "Those sports are easy to pick up and have active communities on social media," Paris 2024 noted.

The past new implementations as well as breaking, to debut in France, have been said by the IOC to be an attempt to attract a younger audience and reflect "the urbanization trend of sport."

Breaking will include head-to-head matchups for men’s and women’s competitions, as well as judges to decide the medals.

Karate and Baseball drops out.

On the dark side, Baseball/softball and karate are dropping out of the next Olympic’s program.

Baseball event, who’s fans were excited for its return as an Olympic sport at Tokyo after a 13-year and two-olympics absent, is removed again from the Olympics schedule for Paris 2024.

IOC now allows each city to add or remove certain sports. Karate made sense to return in Tokyo for historical reasons, as well as baseball due to the huge quantity of Japanese baseball fans. However, with the change of host country for next Games, those two sports suffered a loss in importance.
