SUPER LEAGUE

Super League instigators lobby to relaunch the project

'Der Spiegel' reports that those behind the Super League have hired a London-based marketing and public relations firm to lobby for support for the project.

Update:
Super League instigators lobby to relaunch the project

Plans to create a European Super League outside of UEFA's remit continue to press ahead. The most recent update was offered by Der Spiegel, who confirmed that project organisers are working side by side with a marketing and public relations firm in London called Flint. The company is putting together a dossier entitled: “Paving the way to the Super League: strategies for rebuilding, restarting and winning". The lobby agency's task is rally support for the Super League project, convincing associations, EU politicians and journalists to side with the rebels.

According to the German publication, the strategy will be "a bomb test" against UEFA's current model, which they consider to be abusive and a monopoly. The matter has ended in a legal dispute which is set to be assess by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The Super League gained protection from commercial court No.17 in Madrid and won an injunction which prevents UEFA and FIFA from taking action against Real Madrid, Barça and Juventus. It will be the European courts, with jurisprudence in Switzerland, who will determine whether it is legal to create a tournament outside of UEFA's control or not.

In the meantime, those behind the Super League are confident that their arguments will receive  backing from the law courts. It is also important to remember that all of the clubs who signed up to the project, the 12 founding members, continue to be involved even though nine of them backed out and accepted rejoining UEFA and the European Clubs Association (ECA).

Last week, taking advantage of the Champions League draw in Istanbul, the ECA held their first meeting since the breakaway clubs were reinstated. None of them form part of the board of directors which is presided over by Nasser Al-Khelïfi following Andrea Agnelli's departure to join the Super League. In Geneva next week, in the next clubs meeting, there could be more new developments, with the phantom of the Super League omnipresent.
