Gerard Piqué tops Barcelona scoring charts with 50 goals
Messi's departure means that the club's goalscoring leaderboard is now led by the centre-back, who is 20 goals clear of second placed Dembélé.
The fact that a defender is the top scorer in the Barcelona squad says very little about the team's current strikers. Gerard Piqué is currently the player with the most goals in the Blaugrana jersey with 50, twenty more than Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé, with 30. Evidently, the departure of the great Lionel Messi this year and that of Luis Suárez last summer, has left a bleak picture on the goal-scoring list, which currently has a total of seventeen players. The latest to enter is Memphis Depay, who with two goals, is already ahead of Riqui Puig, one goal, and tied with Samuel Umtiti, Ronald Araújo and Óscar Mingueza.
Dembélé behind Piqué
Not even Antoine Griezmann, who has gone on loan to Atlético Madrid, had yet caught up with Piqué, with the Frenchman having scored 34 goals in the two years at Camp Nou. Behind Piqué and Dembélé in third place is Brazil's Philippe Coutinho, with 24 goals, two more than Jordi Alba, another defender, who has 22 goals to his name.
In sixth place, and after Sergio Busquets (15), is Ansu Fati, with 13 goals. There is no doubt that, if injuries do not prevent him from doing so, Barcelona's new number 10 is one of the favourites overtake Piqué in the scoring charts.
Agüero waits for chance
The other four strikers in the squad still have a lot of work to do. As we have already mentioned, Memphis has already scored two goals in three games, while Denmark's Martin Braithwaite has already scored twice this season, giving him 10 goals in total. For their part, both Sergio Agüero and Luuk de Jong have yet to make their debuts.
In any case, Piqué has always had an eye for goal. Head coach Ronald Koeman scored 235 goals in his career, 67 of which were in the Blaugrana colours, with the goal he scored from a free-kick against Sampdoria in the 1992 European Cup final at Wembley arguably his greatest for the club
