COMMENT

The Washington Football Team needed every second of the 48 minutes to beat the New York Giants and earn their first win of the regular season. Back up quarterback Taylor Heinicke had a career night as The Football Team beat New York 30-29.

Late drama in FedEx Field

Dustin Hopkins kicked the game winner after he got a second crack at a last second field goal after an untimely penalty from New York’s Dexter Lawrence.

It was expected to be a defensive battle, with Washington’s starting quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, injured and New York’s star running back Saquon Barkley still in the process of making a complete from a torn ACL.

Plenty of points in an expected defensive match up

It was evident from the start that this game would be anything but defensive, as the Giants marched down the field and scored  a touchdown on their first possession. The drive was capped off by Giants QB Daniel Jones’ six yard keeper for the first score of the game.

Heinickie and Washington took a little while to get warmed up, but the home team evened up the game in the second quarter with a touchdown pass to his favorite target of the night Terry McLaurin.

Heinicke the hero

The fans at FedEx Field had already taken a liking to Heinicke after last year's near upset of the Tampa Bay Bucs in the first round of the playoffs. If that was his break out performance, then tonight was his coming of age party.

It was just the third Heinicke had ever started a game in the NFL, but he looked poised, comfortable, and showed his killer instinct especially late in the game. The former Old Dominion Monarch led two first half drives of 80 plus yards, including the final drive of the second quarter to give Washington it’s first lead of the night.

Career night for Heinicke

Both quarterbacks stole the show in Landover on Thursday night. Daniel Jones threw for 249 yards and a touchdown, to go along with his 95 yards rushing. Not to mention the 50 yard touchdown run that was wiped off the board due to a holding call.

Heinicke had a career night, throwing for 336 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. The sole interception came at a pivotal time late in the game and could have cost Washington the game.

Washington prevails a thrilling fourth quarter

The fourth quarter went back and forth, as both teams exchanged the lead four times in the final five minutes. After Graham Gano knocked home his 34th consecutive field goal to give the Giants a 26-20 lead with under five minutes to go, Heinicke responded with a two play 75 yard touchdown drive to put the home team in front.

Up by a point, and with possession with under three minutes to go Heinicke got picked off inside the Washington 25 yard line. The Football Team’s defense held the Giants to a field goal to put the visitors up 29-27 at the two minute warning.

It was Heinicke’s time to shine once again. With under two minutes left, he drove the offense down the field and set up a 43 yard field goal for Dustin Hopkins.

Lawrence penalty gives Washington second chance

Hopkins missed the field goal, and New York was in the process of celebrating their first win of the season before the referees announced there was a penalty against New York. Dexter Lawrence jumped offsides, and gave Washington an extra breath of life. Hopkins made no mistake with the second try, banging it through the goal posts and securing the first win of the season for Washington.

McLaurin had 11 catches for 107 yards, and had plenty to say about Taylor Heinicke.

Hello everyone and welcome to FedEx Field where the Washington Football Team and the New York Giants are seeking their first win of the season.

Week 2 of the NFL regular season will start with an NFC East showcase when the New York Giants hit the road to take on the Washington Football Team. AS English will be providing live coverage, scores, stats and highlights of tonight’s primetime match up from FedEx Field.

The NFC East was historically bad last year. Not a single team finished above .500, and the Washington Football Team won the division, almost by default, after finishing 7-9. Both Washington and New York got off to a shaky start losing their opening day games.

There was a considerable lack of star power in the division last year. Dak Prescott and Saquon Barkley are arguably the biggest names in the NFL East, and both were struck down by injuries early in the 2020 season.

Barkley returned to the Giants back field last week after tearing his ACL almost a year ago to the date. That was the good news for the Giants, the bad news was New York only had a total of 60 rushing yards in their Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos.

New York didn’t score a touchdown until the final quarter of their season opener, and by that time the game was long out of reach. Saquan will have to be reincorporated slowly back to full strength but in the meantime they need Daniel Jones to carry the team at the quarterback position.

Washington had a disastrous start to their season, as newly signed quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick left the game before half time with a hip injury. Taylor Heinicke, who nearly led Washington to a playoff win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of last years playoffs, took over and injected life into what was up until that point a toothless offense.

Heinicke went 11-15 with 122 yards and a touchdown in a little over two quarters. Fitzpatrick is due to miss between six to eight weeks.

Hienicke will need some help from Antonio Gibson and the run game, who could have a big night against a Giants defense that gave up almost six yards a carry last week. Terry McLaurin wowed in Week 1 making some spectacular catches. He and Adam Humphries will be looking to stretch the New York defense.

Giants QB Daniel Jones had a solid week in the air, and will need to be just as, if not more, effective so he can open up the defense so Saquon Barkley can rack up some much needed rushing yards tonight.

New York and Washington will kick off at 8:20 p.m. ET from FedEx Field. The game can be seen on NFL Network or NFL Gamepass.
