Honduras experiencing their worst start in World Cup qualifiers

The start of the round-robin has been pretty bad for the Honduras national team, who last night fell to Mexico 3-0 at the Azteca stadium.

Honduras experiencing their worst start in World Cup qualifiers

Honduras are experiencing a complicated start to the World Cup qualifiers in CONCACAF with no wins in their first five games. They are currently in seventh place with three points and a record of 0W-3D-2L. Their latest defeat came last night against Mexico and with the three goals conceded in that game, they have a -6 goal difference.

Their worst start in World Cup qualifiers

They started the opening games of the round-robin tournament with two back-to-back draws on the road. They tied 1-1 against Canada and 0-0 against El Salvador. They finished the first round at home with a 4-1 defeat to the United States and they were hoping to bounce back during the international window of October.

But they have not been able to find the light at the end of the tunnel, because last week they ended with a scoreless draw against Costa Rica at home and on Sunday they lost 3-0 against Mexico. They will try to revert the situation in the last game of this international window when they host Jamaica on 13 October.

In the last four World Cup qualifiers (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018) Honduras had obtained at least five points in the first five games and now they need to start winning if they want to book their ticket to Qatar 2022. Honduras has qualified for two World Cups (2010 and 2014) and they are hoping they can make it to next year’s tournament with eight games left in the qualifiers.
