The consequences of this latest international break has left Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti without two central defenders.

After Brazil informed Madrid that Eder Militao suffered a muscle injury in the back of his right leg last Wednesday, the club has now received more bad news this Thursday regarding Militao’s defensive partner David Alaba.

The 29-year-old defender suffered a severe blow to the knee during Austria's 1-0 defeat to Denmark on Tuesday. And although the first medical examination by Austrian team doctors has ruled out a major problem, he could be doubtful for at least Real Madrid's next match, the Champion League clash with Shakhtar on Tuesday.

Madrid’s medical team will continue to monitor Alaba's situation but it is the type of injury that depends largely on the footballer’s feelings and he will ultimately decide whether he is ready to play or not next Tuesday, in a game that will be decisive for Los Blancos following their shock home defeat to Sheriff (1-2) in UCL matchday two on 28 September.

Real Madrid News:

Double blow for Alaba

The injury comes as a double blow for Alaba given Austria's hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Qatar are practically dead and buried. After this latest international break, Franco Foda’s side find themselves languishing in fourth place in Group F, seven points behind second-placed Scotland. With only two games left to play and a maximum six points available, Austria are now officially out of the running for the playoff spot.

The only remote possibility still remaining for Alaba and Co. is securing one of the two playoff places reserved for the two third-placed teams that have highest UEFA Nations League coefficient at the end of qualifying. But as it stands, Real Madrid’s chances of having Alaba as a club representative at Qatar 2022 are very unlikely.

Mendy and Marcelo recoveries

The international break period has ended with at least some good news for Madrid, with defenders Ferland Mendy and Marcerlo having now fully recovered from their respective injuries. The pair should be available for the game against Shakhtar, providing some relief for Ancelotti at the back.
