Barcelona confirm "Dreamteen" Pedri renewal as club sets €1bn buyout clause

Barcelona has confirmed that Pedri will renew his current deal until 2026, with the 18-year-old midfielder's official signing ceremony set to take place on Friday.

Update:
Barcelona confirm Pedri to renew deal until 2026 as club sets €1bn buyout clause

The Camp Nou is hardly a cradle of good news these days, but confirmation that up-and-coming star Pedri will renew his contract until 2026 will come as a very positive development for a club looking to rebuild for the future.

“We’ll have Pedri for a while,” Barcelona announced to the undoubted delight of Blaugrana fans, who have been anxiously awaiting confirmation of the 18-year-old’s extension.

If any club wants to try to pry the Canary-born midfielder from Barca’s tight grip, they will first have to consider his staggering release clause, which is now set at €1 billion under the terms of his new contract.

Given Barcelona’s financial struggles and limited possibilities of making big signings for the foreseeable future, tying down one of the club’s brightest talents for four more years was essential for the Camp Nou outfit.

Pedri's Barcelona signing ceremony this Friday

AS can reveal that Pedri’s representatives were at Barcelona’s Ciudad Deportiva (Sports City) training base earlier this Thursday to tie up the final details of the youngster’s contract, hours before the confirmation was made.

The official signing ceremony will take place on Friday, with Pedri scheduled to sign his new contract in a private ceremony in president Joan Laporta’s office at lunchtime, followed by a photo session and press conference in Auditori 1899.

Barcelona: The year Pedri turned 18 was one to remember

Pedri is one of the brightest talents in world football and after an impressive breakout year with Barcelona last season, the 18-year-old continued his stellar form into Euro 2020, where he started and played every minute of Spain’s run to the semi-final of this summer’s tournament.

“Pedri officially became an FC Barcelona player on 20 August 2020. The young Barca player was only 17 years old when he was presented in Auditori 1899 and the year he turned 18 proved to be one to remember,” said Barcelona in a statement published on the club’s official website regarding Pedri’s renewal this Thursday. “Thanks to his collective vision for the game, age proved no barrier to Pedri becoming a starter in midfield.”

In the 56 games he has so far played during his Barcelona career, Pedri has netted four goals and provided 6 assists. The young Spaniard has played just four games this season due to a muscle injury that currently has him sidelined.
