Shakhtar Donetsk vs Real Madrid: first half

In a match that started quite equally in Kiev there were initially few chances. Madrid, however, were simply probing one could say. As time ticked on it became quite clear the difference in quality. With stellar performances from Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo and Benzema the Madrid attack slowly began lay siege to the Shaktar defense.

The Brazilian in particular put on an exhibition as he danced through the area on the occasion of his second goal, ending the move with a deft chip into the goal as if to punctuate the point that the early season doubters were wrong.

Shaktar to their credit kept playing throughout. It could even be said that until the own goal breakthrough for Madrid they were holding their own. Yet on the other hand as the match wore on it became clearer that Madrid was only just getting started.

The Brazilian in turn followed suit with a cheeky dink into the net.

For the moment Madrid appear to be a little shaken by the constant pressure from Shaktar. They rebuild through Casemiro.

Shaktar have started the 2nd half with a very high line showing that they intend to give no quarter to Madrid.

And we're off again as the second half begins! If you're just joining us here on AS English, we welcome you to our live text coverage of this UEFA Champions League Group D clash between Shaktar Donetsk and Real Madrid. At the moment Real Madrid are leading 1-0

Madrid currently have the lead after a Kryvstov own goal!

One has to wonder what Shaktar's coach will say to his players as they have given a good account of themselves in this first half. They will have to be calmer in possession if they hope to get anything from this match.

If you're just joining us here on AS Diario English, we welcome you to our live text coverage of this UEFA Champions League Group D match between Shaktar Donetsk and Real Madrid. It's half time at the moment and Madrid leads 1-0 in Kiev after an own goal by Shaktar's Krytsov.

Surprisingly there was no stoppage time as we witnessed a first half with almost no fouls. Both teams have showed a high level of technical and tactical aptitude. We of course know this to be the case with Real Madrid, however, Shaktar is definitely giving a showcase of why they are known as the 'Samba Boys.'

Credit must be given to Shaktar's Dodo as he is consistently able to keep toe to toe with the dangerous Vinicius Jr.

As we approach the half, Madrid are finishing strong as Shaktar are now finding it hard to maintain possession when they have it.

The corner is cleared but Madrid maintain and work the ball to the right and Vinicius Jr. but the ball is put out for a Madrid throw.

Again out of nothing after a failed clearance by Shaktar's defense Benzema fires a shot forcing a save out of the Shaktar keeper. A corner to be taken.

Shaktar are collecting themselves as they play the ball around the backline.

Almost immediately Madrid have sprung to life with Benzema forcing a save out of Trubin moments after the touch.

And out nothing a goal  - except its an own goal as Kryvtsov attempted to cut out the pass from Rodrygo to Benzema only to guide it over his own keeper and into the net. He lies slumped on the turf for an absolute age after the goal flies in, absolutely gutted by that slice of bad luck.

Fernando is almost set off on a 1 on 1 against Militao but commits a foul in the process.

Marlon in the center of defense for the Ukrainian side is showing himself to be a fine defender

Madrid play out from the back once again.

Soloman makes his way down the left side yet again and provides a decent cross but once more there is no Shaktar teammate to be found. Soloman is proving himself to be a real threat to the Madrid defense.

Madrid starts again through Modric who plays wide to Vinicius Jr, but he is easily dispossessed by Maycon who at the moment seems to be everywhere.

Lucas Vasquez with a speculative header which finds the hands of the Shaktar keeper.

Madrid is showing a similar inability to break down Shaktar as they did against Sheriff. In both cases they are in front of a team that is not afraid to play with and maintain the ball.

In perhaps the best moment of the match so far Shaktar worked the ball along the byline only to see the back pass cleared off the Madrid goal line by Mendy.

So far Maycon in the middle has proven a real threat to Madrid.

Defended well by Shaktar they start their way up the field. You get the sense they are comfortable on the ball enjoying shorter passes rather than looking for an immediate long ball into space.

Toni Kroos plays Mendy into space on the left who then crosses into the area, finding Casemiro who sees his effort blocked for a corner.

As if on queue Madrid has started to settle themselves, Modric, who has so far been absent has started to find space in the middle of the ground. He will be essential if Los Blancos are to get something from this game.

Unfortunately the corner is easily cleared and Shaktar mount a counter attack

After decent build up play between Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr. and Benzema, the play ends in a shot from the Frenchman that goes just wide.
