New Jersey is one of two states holding an off-year General Election for state and local government positions. Additionally, New Jerseyites will decide whether or not betting on Garden State-based college teams will be allowed in the state.

This is the first year residents of the Garden State will be able to cast their vote in person prior to Election Day 2 November 2021. Early voting started 23 October and will continue over a nine-day period until 31 October.

Where to cast an early voting ballot in New Jersey General Election

All across New Jersey voters can turn up in-person without an appointment to vote ahead of the 2 November 2021 General Election Day. This was made possible with a bill Governor Murphy signed in March.

During the nine days of early voting New Jersey residents can vote at any early voting location in their county where they are registered to vote. Polls will be open 10:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 10:00 am – 6:00 pm on Sunday. The state provides a list of early voting locations in each county.

On Election Day 2 November 2021 voters who want to vote in person will have to cast a ballot in their assigned precinct. If you don’t know where your assigned voting location is for Election Day, you can look it up on the state Division of Elections website using your address.

Who is on the ballot?

Residents of New Jersey will decide whether the incumbent Governor Phil Murphy will keep his job or one of the other four contenders will replace him. On the ballot again this year with Governor Murphy is his Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver.

New Jerseyites will also vote for all 120 members of the State Legislature in both the General Assembly and Senate. Additionally, voters in counties across the state will vote for local down ballot races.

New Jersey will vote on two statewide ballot questions

The Garden State will vote on two questions to expand gambling in the state. One question will ask if residents want to legalize betting on games in which college teams from the state play even if those games are out of state. As well, it would allow for post-season betting on college sport competitions that take place in New Jersey.

A second question would expand the list of organizations that can use proceeds from “games of chance”, such as raffles or bingo, to raise money to support their organization. Currently only veterans and senior citizens groups are allowed to.
