Clattenburg on 2016 Real Madrid-Atletico final: Ramos was offside and Torres penalty was 50-50

English referee Mark Clattenburg took charge of the 2016 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atlético in 2016 when Real Madrid lifted the trophy after a 5-3 victory on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Speaking to The Brazilian Shirt Name podcast, Clattenburg explained that two decisions during the game - Sergio Ramos' 15th-minute goal and a penalty awarded to Atlético for a foul on Fernando Torres - would not have stood had VAR been around at the time.

On the Ramos goal, Clattenburg, who retired from Premier League officiating in 2017, said that due to a communication breakdown and a hesitant linesman the Madrid defender's strike was allowed to stand, and that as a result he decided to award a penalty to Atlético for a Pepe foul on Torres as a way of compensating Atlético for the earlier decision.

When Antoine Griezmann's effort hammered the crossbar, Clattenburg admitted it was the perfect outcome for him as a referee as his balancing act had worked out without too much controversy.
