Argentina vs Brazil: preview

Argentina have the opportunity to join already-qualified Brazil at the 2022 World Cup when they face Tite’s men in San Juan on Tuesday evening.

The two-time World Cup winners will reach their 12th straight finals if they beat the Seleção and any two of Chile, Colombia and Uruguay fail to win. A draw will also be enough for the hosts if any two of Chile, Colombia and Uruguay lose.

Argentina sit second in CONMEBOL’s qualifying group, six points behind Brazil, who confirmed their place at Qatar 2022 when they beat the Colombians on Thursday.

Chile occupy the fourth and final automatic qualification spot, while Colombia in fifth would go into the play-offs as things stand, with Uruguay in sixth missing out altogether. They’re all 12 points behind Argentina with five matchdays to go, so Lionel Scaloni’s men will take an unassailable lead over fifth place on Tuesday if they increase their points advantage over two of La Roja, Los Cafeteros and La Celeste.

Argentina are unbeaten in their last 26 games - a run that stretches back to July 2019 - and have won their past two meetings with Brazil.

As for the Brazilians, their only defeat in their last 20 matches was one of those Argentina victories - La Albiceleste's 1-0 win in July’s Copa América final, as the Argentinians ended a 28-year wait to lift the South American title.

Brazil forward Neymar has been ruled out of Tuesday's clash with a thigh problem, but Argentina boss Scaloni has confirmed that the Paris Saint-Germain star's club-mate, Lionel Messi, will play for the home side.

Messi missed PSG's last two games with knee and hamstring issues, before featuring for 15 minutes in Argentina's 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Uruguay last week.
