Man City 2-1 PSG: how it happened

City top after dominant win

Goals from Sterling and Jesus cancelled out the surprise opener from Mbappé but this result should never have been in doubt.

The players went in at the break without either net having been bothered but Guardiola's hosts had shown how a well-drilled outfit full of talented stars can function. That challenge has yet to be consistently found by Pochettino.

As it turned out, the loss will not threaten the French club's progress to the Round of 16, but it is City who will finish the group as top dogs, potentially meaning an easier tie in the knockout phase.

Full-time

Goals: Sterling (63'), Jesus (73'); Mbappé (50')

90+3

Peep, peep, peeeep!! It's all over and Man City take all three points.

Cue Wonderwall!

90+3

It's a dangerous enough delivery into the mixer but Ederson takes it ahead of Mbappé. That, as they say, should be that.

90+2

Nothing coming, or being allowed to come, from PSG as we tick towards the final whistle.

Then, from very little, Jesus commits a foul inside his side's half. Last chance saloon...

90

Three minutes to be added.

88

One of the most disappointing features of the PSG side tonight has been the lack of attacking licence given to Achraf. Fair enough he had to play his part at the back, but he could have been a valuable weapon to keep City more occupied in the other direction.

One of the issues when you have to use that front three.

86

PSG having a spell of possession here as they try to nick an equaliser. Sky blue shirts are shutting down any space, working hard as a unit and frustrating their guests.

It's been a very professional performance from the Premier League champions.

82

Guess what?! Pep Guardiola's City are a goal up and are looking to just play keep ball. Yip, incredible, right?

80

Mbappé attempts to take on Stones down the left and, as he drops a shoulder and cuts inside, it appears as though he may have got the better of the Englishman.

Then Mahrez arrives to help out and the danger is gone.

76

Goooooaaaaaaaalllllllll!!!!

What a Man City goal!! Jesus finishes off such a tidy move.

Mahrez deep cross, deliciously controlled by Silva into the path of Jesus, who opens his body and strokes it home. Silk.

73

PSG seem very content for the moment just to keep the ball. Di Maria getting lots of touches since coming on.

As I say that, Messi, Neymar and Di Maria combine brilliantly under lots of pressure and the Brazilian breaks clear to face up against Ederson. His effort slides just to the wrong side of the upright, much to the enjoyment of the nearby crowd.

Love this stat from Miguel. Do we do that sort of comparison with any other set of players? Maybe we should...

67

Double switch from PSG:

Kehrer and Di Maria ON

Mendes and Gueye OFF

67

I would say that the pendulum has swung back in favour of the home side but it's rarely been swinging any other way.

PSG were fortunate to get their noses ahead and with the bit between their teeth I'd expect City to go on and win this.

I've been wrong before!

63

Gooooooaaaaaalllll!!

Talking about needing that angry spark, it worked!

A diagonal ball over the top finds Walker in the inside right channel. His first-time volley across the six-yard box is miscued by Jesus but falls to Sterling who, at a stretch pokes it just inside the left post.

Blue Moon rings out!

61

Herrera can't continue and Pochettino throws on Danilo in his place.

60

An injury to Herrera - former United player, may I remind you - and some follow up retribution from Neymar has the home fans screaming.

That may actually be the trigger required to reignite the Sky Blues.

57

The inventiveness from the City players, or at least that spark to create space, has disappeared since the goal. Neymar and Mbappé combine well, even more so playing on the counter than before, and are close to setting up Herrera for a finish.

Pep needs something to kick his players into gear again.

54

Jesus comes on for Zinchenko. Attack, attack, attack...maybe?

To be fair, the hosts' forward play this evening has been pretty effective. It was their lapse of concentration at the back that cost them.

53

That goal has taken any noise that there was - and there wasn't a whole lot from where I'm sitting - out of this stadium. The face of Pep said it all.

Looks like City are about to make a change.

50

Gooooooaaaaaaaaallll!!

Forget the pressure, forget the chances, PSG have some quality up front.

After some steady build-up on the left, Messi fires a low cross into the area where Mbappé controls and fires through the legs of Ederson. The French star was in acres of space!

47

A little play in their own half ends with Cancelo going long for the run of Sterling deep down the left.

He swaps fairly pathetic attempts to win a soft free-kick with Marquinhos - the ref rightly ignores them both - and City almost then catch out the French defence with a clever ball over their heads. Offside called.

Peep! City get the ball rolling, playing right to left as I look on.

OK, the teams slowly making their way back out onto the field, City players having a right natter as they do.

Will it be more of the same? You're about to find out...

Across in Tiraspol, Real Madrid appear to be taking care of business. Follow the excellent William Allen if you fancy a bit of that.

Half-time

No goals but there has been plenty to admire about the football.

45+1

Peep! The ref just blows up and sends the players into the changing room for refreshments and, hopefully, some wise words.

45

We'll have an added minute

43

A rare opening for PSG as they win the ball back in the midfield and have numbers.

Neymar rolls a pass ahead of Mbappé who latches onto it but chooses to try a spectacular effort from the edge of the area rather than beating the last man. It's flies well over Ederson's crossbar.

42

A little breather for the PSG defence in the last minute or two, although it feels as though City have chosen to take their foot off the gas rather than anything else.

Mbappé gets a chance to sprint away from Rodri but the Spaniard matches him and very much holds his own.

39

There was a great moment there when, on the back of this dominant period from his players, Guardiola turned to the crowd and gestured for them to make more noise.

It didn't really work, and you can understand why he talks about places like Anfield being special on these European nights.

36

Chance after chance falling to City players, but there is always a blocking defender there to thwart them.

PSG need more outlets to relieve the pressure.

City turning the screw

Brennan says it better than me.

The last few minutes have been a lesson in consistent pressure on an opposition goal. PSG's defence are struggling to work out who and where to cover but, more importantly, haven't yet conceded.

32

CLANG! Gündogan meets the ball as it is deflected out of a busy six-yard area and tries to pick his spot. It looks to have Keylor well beaten but bounces back out off the uopright.

City are knock, knock, knocking on the Parisiens' door.

28

From what we're seeing, Guardiola appears to have put and onus on his wide men getting a mixture of crosses into the area from the edges of box.

Mahrez and Silva are so adept at creating a yard of space to make that possible and are causing all sorts of problems.

24

Although City have had the bulk of the play and territory, the Ligue 1 visitors have shown enough that their quality can deal with the press. That is opening up space behind, which Neymar and Mbappé especially are looking to exploit.

Messi's had a couple of plays to open things up but not anywhere near the danger zone.

19

City slickers

Mahrez finishes off a wonderfully intricate move from the hosts but just as it looks to be curling into the far top corner, an Achraf Hakimi header deflects it over the bar.

16

Neymar threatens

At last, PSG fans may shout out. The Brazilian works his way into space in the centre of City's penalty box and pulls the trigger, although it's a dud.

The weak effort does roll through to Mbappé but he's well offside. A tidy finish from Neymar would likely have counted.

12

Immediately from the Sterling chance, Mbappé decides to take matters into his own hands.

He skips past two players but support is hardly making its presence known and his flow is stunted. They work it back before the whole attack fizzles out.

10

Sterling is found at the back post after excellent work from Mahrez on the right, shifting the ball ahead of the defender and dinking over the cross.

The English winger has a chance to either take it on the volley or stick a head on it, neither simple, but holds back and allows it to be cleared.

Decent start from City.

8

Another chance for the hosts, this time coming from a mistake from Herrera in midfield.

That turnover allows Silva to scamper down the left wing, before rolling the ball inside to Zinchenko. The defender could have played it back but dallied and was smothered out of possession by the back-trackers.

6

Kimpembe off the line

First real chance as Rodri directs a header past Keylor but the defender is there to head away.

That got the crowd off their seats, and was a warning to the visitors that City are not all about neat and tidy play on the deck.

3

PSG get the game going but City are lightning fast to press and win the ball back.

A little control shown then a ball fired across goal looking to pick out Silva at the back. Just intercepted.

It's started in the direction predicted earlier.

Peep! We're off...

It's almost time...

The players are out of the tunnel and listening to the Champiiiiiions anthem.

Are they ready? Are you ready? I am. Let's go...

PSG's troubles on the road

They may have sent City back to Manchester from the French capital with a 2-0 defeat to ponder earlier in this group stage but PSG have struggled more than a hedgehog with a sore foot on the road.

That is why they sit behind their opponents tonight in the table.

Held to draws at Club Brugge (1-1) and at RB Leipzig (2-2) has suggested Pochettino's boys get homesick rather quickly in the Champions League.

Another result today's visitors will want to forget is last season's semi-final.

City-PSG with no fans

How different football matches were last season. There will be much more noise from a packed (surely it must be tonight!) Etihad, but will the City players be defending like this?

Not if my previous prediction is anything to go by.

Inside the Etihad

Here are a selection of pics from inside the PSG dressing room.

A few of those shirts are likely to be popular souvenirs for someone in the crowd - or even on the pitch - come the end of the game.

Teams reflection

This is one of those games where I find it really difficult to make a firm call either way on a result. That said, what's the point of me doing this if I don't share my thoughts.

City will overrun PSG and win by two! Oh, that was less of a struggle than I thought! Let me try and back that up with some arguments that can be mocked later when I'm branded a fool...

There is no debating the fact that with an attacking three of the calibre of PSG, then danger is never more than a split second away, and that applies to a game even if they don't have a lot of the ball. The other fact, however, is that so much is asked of the rest of the team during their absence of possession.

City are the masters of this, grinding down the opponent while moving them in ways they were not expecting. And this is why I predict a fairly comfortable night for the hosts.

Starting XI: PSG

Navas; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Mendes; Herrera, Paredes, Gueye; Messi, Neymar, Mbappé

There it is, that famous, if rather new, attacking trident.

Starting XI: Man City

Ederson, Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo, Rodrigo, Gundogan (C), Zinchenko, Mahrez, Bernardo, Sterling

Remember there's no De Bruyne, while Jesus, Laporte adn Fernandihno start from the bench.

Right, team news is coming in. Home side first up...

Messi-Guardiola: what a mix

You've still got time before kick off to have a read of this piece by Dermot Corrigan, an excellent breakdown of these two greats of the game. Here's an excerpt:

“They will salute each other and hug emotionally,” says a source who knows Messi well. “Their relationship has always been good, closer at some times than others, but always good. They owe each other a lot.”

In their four seasons together at Nou Camp, Barcelona won 14 trophies — including three La Liga crowns, two Champions Leagues and two World Club Cups. Messi also firmly established himself as the best individual player in the world — his first Ballon d’Or came after his first full season under Guardiola in 2008-09, and he retained it every year they worked together from that point.

That is not to say that everything ran smoothly...

Manchester weather

It's nearly December and for those not familiar with conditions in England at this time of year then I can tell you that tonight ain't so bad.

I've played in howling winds, sleet and snow not far from there in the winter months. So no complaints, Mr Messi.

How they stand: Group A

A win for PSG would guarantee their progression to the last 16, while a victory for City would see Guardiola's team top Group A.

PSG won the previous meeting between the sides in the group stage, with Lionel Messi scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes.

Will we be seeing the Neymar-Messi-Mbappé frontline from the start tonight. We'll know soon enough...

Ramos is back... sort of!

Sergio Ramos took a significant step towards making his Paris Saint-Germain debut after he was named in the squad to face Manchester City.

He is yet to feature for PSG, having struggled with a calf issue since his arrival from Real Madrid on a free transfer in the close season.

I'm pretty sure he'll not be starting for Pochettino's side though, although it would be good for him to get a couple of minutes at the end.

Early team news: PSG

It looks as though Marco Verratti and Georginio Wijnaldum are missing for PSG tonight. A massive blow for Pochettino!

Manchester Messi

Here's a man that knows a thing of two about the opposition manager. Lionel Messi was the star of stars in that Barcelona team of Guardiola, one of the greatest teams ever to play the Beautiful Game.

A lot has changed for both manager and player since then, of course.

Something to Pep you up
