The Pittsburgh Steelers have some way to go if they hope to make it to the Super Bowl this year, as they are currently in third place in the AFC North standings at 5-4-1.

They have been given very low odds of making it to the playoffs, and have yet to exhibit the form that earned them multiple appearances at the Super Bowl.

They did showcase some of their championship-caliber moves last year, with an 11-0 start. But they were not able to sustain the momentum and eventually collapsed, being kicked out in the Wild Card round by the Cleveland Browns

A champion's history

If you are a recent football fan, it may be a bit of a challenge to think of them as Super Bowl superstars, but that’s exactly what they are. They have the most Super Bowl titles tucked under their belt, tied with the New England Patriots at six apiece.

Pittsburgh dominated the 70s, winning back-to-back championships in 1974 and 1975. They then went on to clinch the trophy in 1978 and 1979.

A promising start in the new century

They slowed down after that but came back strong in the new millennium, winning in 2005 and 2008. They made their last Super Bowl appearance two years later in 2010, but lost to the Green Bay Packers.

It’s been 13 years since their last trophy, and it looks like an uphill climb to capture another one for the Steelers.

It remains to be seen whether the efforts of future Hall-of-Famer quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and a defense that has been considered one of the league’s best will be enough to somehow eke out a spot for Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
