Three people have been declared dead, a 16-year-old boy and two girls, aged 14 and 17. Two others are undertaking surgery this evening, while six more remain in hospital, but in a stable condition.

The Oakland Sheriff department has identified the three students who died as 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hanna St. Julian and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin.

Eight others were injured: Seven students, one teacher.

The assailant surrendered to police after dropping his weapons and is now in police custody. A motive has yet to be determined for the attack, but police say they are investigating social media to found out.

Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said in a press conference that he was aware of allegations that there were threats of a shooting, but at that stage they were unconfirmed rumors.

“He fired multiple shots,” McCabe said. “Somewhere in the area of 15 to 20.”

Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer also spoke at the news conference with McCabe, saying, “I think this is every parent’s worst nightmare."

School shooting numbers reduced during the covid-19 lockdowns, the number of such attacks has returned, with 138 incidents of gunfire on school grounds so far in 2021.
