The Kansas City Chiefs continue to be plagued by the coronavirus pandemic, with tight end Travis Kelce being placed on the covid-19 list. But the 32-year-old may still have a chance to play for their Week 16 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium as he has been vaccinated.

He would be allowed to play if he passes the NFL’s updated covid-19 protocols by the time rosters are finalized for their Sunday match at home.

Revamped NFL protocols

The guidelines allow players to rejoin their team on the field if they are vaccinated, asymptomatic, and show negative results two times within 24 hours.

Unvaccinated players have to go through a 10-day quarantine, which would prevent them from playing a game within that period if they tested positive for the virus.

Kelce has recorded 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns this season, and has just been named as one of the players who will participate in the Pro Bowl in February.

If he is unable to clear the covid protocols in time for their home game, the Chiefs will have tight ends Blake Bell and rookie Noah Gray to fall back on.

Growing covid-19 reserve list

Along with Kelce, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butler and cornerback Charvarius Ward have also been placed on the covid-19 list.

They will join defensive tackle Chris Jones, linebacker Willie Gay Jr., and wide receiver Josh Gordon who are already on covid-19 reserve and missed action during their overtime win on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chiefs will host the Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 16. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET / 1:25 PT.
