Steelers 10 vs. 36 Chiefs summary: stats, scores, and highlights | Week 16

The Kansas CIty Chiefs stay on top of the AFC after a demolishion of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Patrick Mahomes threw for 258 yard and three TDs in the win.

The Kansas City Chiefs are champions of the AFC West after crushing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon in Arrowhead. Patrick Mahomes threw for 258 yards, and three touchdowns in the Chiefs 36-10 win to keep Kansas City in pole position to take home field advantage in the playoffs.

Chiefs make it 8 straight

The Chiefs move to 11-4 on the year, and keep a one game advantage on the Tennessee Titans in the AFC. The win was the eighth straight for the Chiefs who haven’t dropped a game since losing to the Titans back in late October.

Since the Titans loss the defense has tightened the screws and have been rock solid, holding opponents to under 13 points per game since then. The Chiefs defense was once again vacuum sealed holding the Steelers to a garbage time touchdown when they were already up by more than 30 points.

KC scores 14 points in 3 minutes to end 1st quarter

Kansas City running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire got the party started with a two yard touchdown run on the opening drive the Chiefs night. On the very next play from scrimmage Charvarius Ward intercepted Ben Rothlisberger setting up yet another first quarter scoring drive.

This time is was Patrick Mahomes finding Byron Pringle in the back of the endzone for the second Chiefs touchdown in a matter of three minutes. That would be enough to stun the Steelers into oblivion, and put it on cruise the rest of the way.

The lead was stretched to 23-0 right before the end of the first half when Mecole Hardman danced his way into the endzone for a nine yard touchdown reception.

Steelers first half struggles carry into second half

Pittsburgh had just 117 yards of total offense, and had committed more turnovers than they had points.

Not much changed in the second half as the Steelers started with a non contact fumble committed by Diontae Johnson. The play was a perfect summation of how Pittsburgh were playing up until that point.

Byron Pringle stretched the lead to 30-0 with a 16 yard catch and run to put the game to rest. The Chiefs would take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the way, but not before Mahomes finished with 258 yards to go along with his three TD passes.

The ten points conceded by the defense came when the game was dead and gone. Johnson was able to get into the endzone with just under three minutes to go in the game.

Playoff outlook

The win keeps the Chiefs in the top spot in the AFC, and they control their own destiny in the race for home field advantage.

The Steelers were in the last AFC Wild Card spot coming into the game after losses by Baltimore and Los Angeles. They are still in the hunt but the loss certainly didn’t do them any favors.

This sack and fumble recovery led to the final score of the Steelers night.

Pringle with TD number 2.

If this isn't a summary of the Steelers night, I don't know what is.

Hardman dancing his way into the endzone.

Pringle made it two touchdowns in three minutes and the Chiefs led 14-0.

Ward with the pick just a play after the touchdown and the Steelers never recovered after the ensuing TD.

The Chiefs first possession set the tone for the rest of the night.

CHIEFS WIN!!!

That's it from KC!!! The Chiefs win the game and win the division in convincing fashion.

They stay on top of the AFC heading into the final two weeks of the season.

PIT gets a stop, and the Steelers will take over from their 40 yard line after the punt.

KC gets the ball with under 3 minutes to go and they can run the clock out with a couple first downs.

TOUCHDOWN STEELERS!!!

Johnson and the Steelers finally find the endzone with under 3 minutes to go.

The 15 yard TD catch brings the score to 36-10

KC looks like they have switched off the offense. PIT comes up with the Goal to go stop and force another FG.

Fry's FG is good from 30 yards and the Chiefs lead 36-3

FUMBLE!!!

Roethlisberger is swallowed up as soon as he goes for the play action and he fumbles the football, it's recovered by Reed who takes it inside the PIT 10.

FIELD GOAL CHIEFS!!!

The Chiefs tack on a field goal to start the fourth quarter, and the onlslot continues. Fry splits the uprights on the 34 yard field goal.

Chiefs lead 33-3 with 11:57 to go in the fouth quarter.

End of 3rd Q

KC is back in PIT territory after a conversion on 3rd and short and that will bring an end to the 3rd quarter.

Gore picks up a big chunk with a run up the middle and not much has changed on that front. KC continues to march down the field with ease.

FIELD  GOAL STEELERS!!!!

PIT was going to go for it on 4th and 10 from the 11, but a false start pushes the Steelers nback to 4th and 15 and coach Tomlin brings on the field goal unit.

Boswell hits the 34 yard field goal and the Steelers finally have points on the board. 30-3 with 3:34 left in the 3rd quarter.

A defensive PI will move the chains for the Steelers who look like they might just get their first points of the game.

1st and 10 from the 11.

Harris can't come up with the catch on 3rd and 4, and the desperate Steelers will go for it from the KC 33

Washington picked up the first down on a an 8 yard reception, but then got flagged for taunting which will back the Steelers up to the KC 38.

It has been a night to forget for the Steelers, but Johnson will want to put this game tape in the incinerator. He just dropped a 3rd an 11 pass over the middle, but gets bailed out by the offside on the defense.

Harris with a rare highlight run for the Steelers tonight. He jumps over a defender and picks up a first down on a beautiful run. He looks like the only who is still playing for Pittsburgh.

Pringle with his second touchdown catch of the night.

This was the inexplicable fumble by Johnson.

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Mahomes to Pringle, and again the Steelers get absolutley dominated by a couple moves and a shaken tackle and Pringle walks into the endzone.

30-0 Chiefs are all over the Steelers.

The Chiefs on another efficient, easy looking drive. Pittsburgh might as well pack it up and get on the bus. There wouldn't be much of a difference the way the Steelers defense is playing.

Johnson with an inexplicable fumble after not even being touched. A sign of the times for Pittsburgh whose struggles continue to keep them from getting back in this game.

KC takes over from midfield.

The Steelers come up with a stop on the opening series of the second half, and is this a sign of change coming up for Pittsburgh.

PIT will take over around their own 30 looking for their first points of the game.

Start of 3rd Q

The Chiefs get the ball to start the half up 23-0.

Hardman extends the lead before the halftime break.

The pick set up the TD to Pringle on the next drive.

Ward with a pick on the next play

CE-H with the opening TD of the game.

PIT Stats

Big Ben has 88 yards on 12/17 passing,

Harris has 29 yards on 8 carries,

and Claypool has 34 yards on two catches.

KC Stats

Williams has 25 yards on 4 carries,

and Gord had 61 yards on three catches, Hardman and Pringle both have TD catches

End of 1st Half

Harris is wrapped up on the short pass and that will end the first half.

The Chiefs come out hot, and end by shutting down the Steelers offense.

23-0 KC leads, and it should probably be more.

MISSED FIELD GOAL!!!

Mahomes looking for Gordon in the back of the endzone and the Steelers for the Chiefs into a field goal.

Fry's 39 yard field goal is no good. He pulled it wide left and the Steelers will have the ball with 18 seconds left and two timeouts.

TURN OVER ON DOWNS!!!

The Steelers are stopped on thir down and go for it on 4th from their own 31. Harris is stopped and the Chiefs will get it back from the PIT 31 with a minute to go.

Hardman makes the move as lunges for the endzone to stretch the lead to 23-0

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Hardman catches it in the flat and shakes a few defenders for his second touchdown of the season.

Hardman had no business scoring that, but it is a perfect depiction of how poorly the Steelers defense is playing.

23-0 Chiefs lead after the missd PAT with 2:13 to go in the half.

Mahomes escapes pressure and finds Gore wide open down the sideline for 50 yards.

Mahomes is making magic happen with legs and his arms, and they look like they are on the verge of making this a four score game before the half.

The Chiefs will take over from their 26 with under 5 minutes to go in the half.

MISSED FIELD GOAL!!!

The Steelers would have loved to settle for a field goal, but Boswell misses the 36 yarder and nothing is working for the Steelers.

We have seen the Steelers look like this all to often this season, and this is not a team that looks like they are capable of making the playoffs.

That breaks his streak of 43 straight FGs from inside 40 yards.

After a couple incompletions the Steelers go with a short pass in the flat that is sniffed out by the Chiefs. 4th down for the Steelers who will have to settle for the field goal.

Juggling catch by Claypool over the middle for a 24 yard gain. The Steelers are finally in KC territory for the first time today.

Biggest play of the game for the Steelers comes off a run by Harris that went for 21 yards. Can that get the Steelers going?

They have to establish the run game even though they are down be 17 early on.

FIELD GOAL CHIEFS!!!

The Steelers finally stop the Chiefs, as Mahomes' pass went in and out of the hands of Gordon.

Fry's FG is good from 44 yards. That was not an easy kick with the wind blowing like it is in Arrowhead. Chiefs lead 17-0 with 8:45.

On 3rd down Mahomes finds Hardman over the middle, and Hardman almost broke it. A 14 yard gain puts the Chiefs at the PIT 31

Williams picks up 8 yards on first down and it seems like KC is getting 8 or 9 yards on every play they run.

PIT's Defense is playing flat, and the offense hasn't shown up. It's going to be a bloodbath for the Steelers if they can't find a way to come out and compete.

Big Ben was almost intercepted on 3rd down and the Steelers will punt.

The wind seems to really be affecting the Steelers offense, but KC is having no problems moving the ball on a gusty afternoon.

Chiefs lead 14-0 and will take over from the 20 after the punt

Finally something position as Johnson takes the end around for 8 yards to end the half.

As easy as it seems for the Chiefs, it seems equally as difficult for the Steelers to move the ball.

We are at the end of the 1st Quarter and it's been all Chiefs in Arrowhead.

The Chiefs drove right down the field after the pick to score their second TD in three minutes.

Ward with the pick on the very next play.

Check out Edwards-Helaire putting the truck stick on the PIT defense.

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Pringle in the endzone after Mahomes wiggled away from some pressure.

The Chiefs have scored two touchdowns in three minutes and the Steelers find themselves climbing a steep up hill mountain in the final three quarter.

Williams out of the backfield for 18 yards, and Mahomes is spreading the ball around to any and everyone in the stadium wearing red.

Mahomes hits Pringle for 28 yards on 3rd and 2 and the Chiefs are back inside the 25.

If KC goes up 14-0 it could be dgame over already in Arrowhead.

INTERCEPTION CHIEFS!!!

On the first play of the drive Roethlisberger goes deep and overthrows McCloud and Ward picks off Big Ben.

A terrible start to the game for the Steelers offense.

That was an 8:10 drive for the Chiefs. What a first possession to set the tone in a huge game with heavy playoff implications.

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Edwards-Helaire absorbs a big hit in the backfield and strolls into the endzone!!!

Wait until you see the collision and the second effore by the KC running back.

Chiefs lead 7-0 after scoring an opening drive touchdown for the 8th time this year.

Mahomes hits Gray for a 5 yard gain, but it won't be enough for a first down. The 4th is converted with a Burton run up the middle. 1st and Goal from the 1 yard line.

Mahomes first incompletion leads to a third and long, but an offside penalty cut 3rd and 11 to 3rd and 6.

It's looking very easy for the Chiefs offense who are moving with ease down the field. Mahomes is 5/5 and the Chiefs are on the 12 with a first and 10 coming up

Welcome back Tyreek!! The speedy receiver just dragged down his first catch since going out with COVID. It was good for a first down and the Chiefs are in PIT territory

The Chiefs have scored a TD on 7 opening possesions. That's tops in the NFL

Here comes Patrick Mahomes and his 21-0 record in NOV and DEC over the last three seasons

Roethlisberger is sacked on third down, and if the Steelers can't protect their quarterback it will be a long day in KC.

Chiefs will start their drive from around their 30 after a nice return from Hardman

Johnson with a brilliant toe tap grab on the sideline for the opening first down of the game. Huge hook up for Ben and Johnson who will have to be great to beat the Chiefs tonight.

Big Ben hasn't been at his best, but this is the typical game where he goes off letting everyone know he's still Big Ben

Here comes the Steel Curtain

Steelers drip on the road.

The scene is set for today's showdown.

Hill back, Kelce out for Chiefs today

Good news for the Chiefs, they will get their explosive wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who has been activated from the Reserve/Covid list. The bad news is they will be without Travis Kelce who went on the COVID list after having the best game of his career.

KC looking to stay ahead in hunt for home field

The Chiefs need to win to stay on top of the AFC after the Titans beat San Francisco on Thursday night. KC currently has the best record in the conference.

PIttsburgh can get into playoff position today

Pittsburgh came into the day a half game out of the Wild Card chase, with the tie against the Detroit Lions making the difference to this point in the season. Depending on what happens in the Chargers-Texans and Pats-Bills game the Steelers could be in playoff position be day’s end.

KC is on a hot streak

The Chiefs have surged to the top of the conference with a seven game win streak. Their most recent win came last Thursday in a divisional matchup against the LA Chargers. Travis Kelce had a career high game with 191 yards and two touchdowns including the game winner in overtime. The win pushed the Chiefs past the Patriots and Titans for top spot in the AFC.

Defense carried Steelers in Nashville

Ben Roethlisberger passed for just 148 yards and the Steelers had just 168 yards of total offense, but it has been the Pittsburgh defense came up big in the win over the Titans. Their defense has been awfully inconsistent this season, but in three of the last four wins the Steelers have held their opponents to under 20 points.

Steelers right in the AFC Wild Card mix

The Steelers are back above .500 after beating the Tennessee Titans last week. Pittsburgh scored 16 unanswered second half points in Nashville to move to a game behind the Bengals and the Ravens who play in the early slot today. We will keep you posted with scores in that game as we head into the afternoon slate of games.
