The NBA may see some changes in the competition format among the 30 teams participating in the league, and these changes may be coming soon.

In an effort to make the game more competitive, dynamic, and entertaining, the NBA and the NBA Players Association have been in talks to thresh out the details of a future in-season tournament.

Ironing out the deal

The two parties are discussing the tournament’s elements and these could be implemented as early as the 2022-23 or 2023-24 season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The report says that the in-season tournament would start with pool play as part of the regular season, after which the eight teams with the best records will be moving on to a single-elimination tournament that would come to a head before Christmas.

The new format is inspired by in-season competitions in European soccer such as Spain’s Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League.

Carrots for both sides

As an incentive for the players, there are talks of awarding one million dollars to each player of the winning team, and there may be other financial rewards in store for the athletes before the deal is finalized.

The NBA is hoping that the new format will deliver big profits from television exposure as well as sponsorships. There have been some misgivings about revenue as there will be less games in the season- the new format would cut the number of games in the regular season from 82 to 78.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver advocates the new set-up as he believes it will gain popularity among both players and fans, especially after witnessing the success of the in-season competitions in Europe.
