How does the MLS SuperDraft 2022 work?
On Tuesday 11 January, the MLS SuperDraft will take place ahead of the start of the 2022 regular season and 28 clubs will choose the best prospects.
The 2022 Major League Soccer campaign is scheduled to start in late-February and teams have started their pre-season to prepare for the opening day. There have been a lot of roster changes made in many franchises across the league and the 28 clubs are now preparing for the 2022 SuperDraft that is scheduled to take place on 11 January.
The best prospects in the league
The MLS SuperDraft inaugural edition took place 22 years ago and it gives the opportunity to young prospects to start their professional career at their highest level. One of the facts of this event is that the MLS clubs prioritize positions rather than pure talent.
The order is determined by a mix of the teams’ playoff and regular season standings and the expansion team gets the first pick in the annual college draft in MLS. If there are two expansion teams during the SuperDraft a coin toss will determine who goes first and who goes second.
The winners of the 2021 MLS Cup, New York City FC, will go last and the runner-up, Portland Timbers, will get the penultimate selection. If there’s a between first and last place, it will be broken by the goal differential, goals scored, goals conceded and then the flip of a coin.
