The head coaches fired on Black Monday: Nagy, Zimmer, Flores

Three coaches were fired from the NFL on Black Monday, Miami Dolphins’ Brian Flores, Chicago Bears’ Matt Nagy and Minnesota Vikings’ Mike Zimmer.

Update:
Three coaches were fired from the NFL on Black Monday, Miami Dolphins’ Brian Flores, Chicago Bears’ Matt Nagy and Minnesota Vikings’ Mike Zimmer.

Although layoffs in the 2021-2022 NFL season began on Sunday with coach Vic Fangio parting ways with the Denver Broncos, it is tradition that some head coaches get let off the Monday after the end of the regular season.

Dolphins’ Brian Flores, Bears’ Matt Nagy and Vikings’ Mike Zimmer were let go on Monday

Brian Flores and the Dolphins

To many people’s surprise, the Miami Dolphins fired Brian Flores only three seasons in with the team. Flores’ last two seasons ended with a winning record (10-6 and 9-8), but still wasn't enough to get Miami to the postseason.

Team owner Stephen Ross made the decision of letting go of coach Flores due to his interest in improving the young team’s overall structure.

Two from the NFC North: Nagy and Zimmer

Following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the Chicago Bears ended the 2021 regular season by firing coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace.

In four years with Chicago, Nagy posted a 34-31 record in the regular season and 0-2 in the playoffs.
In his first season at the helm, Nagy led the Bears to 12 wins in the regular season, reaching the NFC North crown and the Coach of the Year award.

Moreover, the Vikings’ Mike Zimmer knew his job was on the line for a few weeks before Minnesota fired him and general manager Rick Spielman.

Zimmer was the Vikings’ head coach for the past eight seasons, departing with a 72-56-1 record in the regular season and 2-3 in the playoffs. Zimmer offered a statement hours after getting fired.

Of the nine coaches Minnesota has had in its history, Zimmer is third in terms of wins, only behind the historic Bud Grant and Dennis Green.
