The Spanish Super Cup gets underway this week with four sides in the quest for the first silverware of the 2021-22 season as last year's Copa del Rey winners and runners-up in FC Barcelona and Athletic join 2020-21 LaLiga champions and second placed side in Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

This will be the third time the new 'Final Four' style format will be used and as per the 2019 edition the competition will return to be staged in Saudi Arabia. Back in 2019, the city of Jeddah witnessed Real Madrid securing the title, beating city rivals Atletico on a penalty shoot out after the final ended 0-0.

Zinedine Zidane was on the Madrid bench that night and for the 2021 edition, new manager Carlo Ancelotti will be looking to secure his first title in his second spell back at the Santiago Bernabéu side.

The Italian managed the club from 2013-2015 and in that time bagged a Spanish Copa del Rey title, a UEFA Champions League and Super Cup along with bagging the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014.

The 62-year-old will be disputing his second Spanish Super Cup as Real Madrid coach in Riyadh this week after his sole participation in the competition in August 2014 ended in defeat as 'Los Blancos' fell 3-1 on aggregate to Atleti.

Madrid travel to Saudi Arabia as current LaLiga leaders and play Barça in the first semi-final with the winners set to face the victor from the second semi-final as Athletic play At. Madrid.
