Athletic reached the trophy decider by defeating LaLiga champions Atlético Madrid in Thursday’s semi-final, late goals by Yeray Álvarez and Nico Williams giving the Basques a 2-1 win over Diego Simeone’s men.

Meanwhile, Madrid saw off Barcelona in a thrilling last-four clash on Wednesday, Fede Valverde’s extra-time winner earning Los Blancos a 3-2 triumph over their arch rivals.

Sunday’s final is a clash between the teams to have lifted the revamped Super Cup so far: Madrid were its inaugural winners in 2019/20, beating Atlético in a final penalty shoot-out in Jeddah, before Athletic claimed the trophy 12 months ago with an entertaining extra-time victory over Barça in Seville.

Athletic Club vs Real Madrid: team news

Semi-final goalscorer Nico Williams is expected to come into the Athletic Club midfield together with Mikel Vesga, with Oier Zarraga and Álex Berenguer making way. In attack, Raúl García - who has been a public critic of the decision to play the Super Cup in Saudi Arabia - is set to partner Iñaki Williams in place of Oihan Sancet.

Yuri Berchiche and Unai Núñez are both fit again after injury lay-offs - the former returned as a substitute in the win over Atlético - but are not likely to start.

As for Real Madrid, right-back Dani Carvajal has been ruled out of the final after contracting covid-19, and is expected to be replaced by Lucas Vázquez. In central defence, meanwhile, David Alaba remains a doubt after missing the semi-final with a muscle problem. Nacho Fernández will again deputise for Alaba if the Austrian doesn’t make it.
