NFC Championship: Most appearances, wins, losses

The Rams will host the 49ers in Sunday’s NFC Championship, a game which the 49ers dominated in the 1980s, and with which both teams are quite familiar.

Update:

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams will host the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Neither team is a stranger to this game. It was the Niners who dominated the Conference in the 80s. They were the winners of the title in 2020 (beating the Packers that time as well), but were underdogs going into it this year. After two upsets over the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, the Niners are back again and will have their work cut out for them against the Rams.

Though the Rams haven’t had quite the experience the 49ers have in the NFC Championship Game, they did beat the Saints in it in 2019 to take them to the Super Bowl (albeit in part thanks to a controversial erroneous call by officials).

NFC teams with the most wins, losses, appearances in Championship Games

Since its start in 1970, here are the teams who’ve had the most appearances, wins, and losses in an NFC Championship Game:

The 49ers are the team with the most NFC Championship appearances, this year making a total of 17. Five of those games have happened since 2011. The Rams, by comparison, have made 11 NFC Conference Game appearances (the third most, after the Dallas Cowboys), with four wins total.

The team who has won the most is the team with the second-most appearances, the Dallas Cowboys. They have appeared in 14 NFC Championships and have won a total of eight. The first of those wins was in 1970, the first year of the game. They had another stint in the early 90s with four straight appearances and three victories between 1992 and 1995. Sadly for them, that was their most recent appearance. The Niners have an opportunity to tie the Cowboys for most wins this Sunday if they can beat the Rams.

Well, it seems the more you appear in the game, the more you could lose it. That makes sense, right? The Niners are currently in the lead for most losses in NFC Championship Games with nine total losses. It’s also possible they could extend that lead rather than tying the Cowboys for wins if they lose this Sunday against the Rams.

The 49ers host the Rams this Sunday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m. ET at SoFi Stadium.
