Update:
Already due to miss the 2022 NBA All-Star game due to injury, the Nets' Kevin Durant won't even attend after the sad passing of his grandmother on Sunday.

There are some things in life that are more important sport, like the loss of a loved one. The Nets' star is in a difficult moment, but he's definitely got support.

Kevin Durant misses NBA All-Star game after grandmother's death

Though it had already been established that Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant would not be playing in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game due to a knee injury, he was still voted in as captain by virtue of receiving the most fan votes of any player in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunate though it is, it now seems that Durant won't even be in attendance for the big game on Sunday night. According to an Instagram post made by his mother, Wanda, her mother Barbara Davis - grandmother of Kevin Durant - sadly passed away on Sunday.

"It is with great sadness that we share with family and friends that our Dear Sweet Mama, BARBARA A. Davis, transitioned early this morning," Wanda Durant wrote. "Words can not describe how our family feels during this time. We want to thank everyone for their prayers, condolences, and well wishes. God is GOOD and His PEACE comforts all of us."

Family is everything for Kevin Durant

Over the years, the close relationship that Kevin Durant maintains with his family has been on full display for all to see, especially where his mother is concerned. Wanda Durant has often been seen court side when her son is playing. Indeed it was back in 2014 when Durant famously referred to her as the "real MVP" while giving his acceptance speech after receiving the MVP award himself. Many regarded the moment as one the most memorable and heartwarming moments in the league's recent history. With that, it almost seems expected that Durant would skip the All-Star game in order to be at his mother's side while the family grieves.

A Ceremony missed and an uncertain future for Kevin Durant

While it pales in comparison to the importance of being with his family during this difficult time, it's interesting to note that Durant who was named a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team at the start of the season, was set to be honored alongside the other nominated players during a special halftime ceremony on Sunday night. Where Durant's immediate future is concerned, things are still not certain. Having suffered an MCL sprain in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans back on January 15th, Durant hasn't played a game since. The former league MVP recently begun participating in on-court work, but there has been no concrete announcement regarding when he is likely to return to the roster.
