US economic sanctions hit Russian top flight side CSKA Moscow

CSKA Moscow's holding company has appeared on the US Treasury sanction listing with the organization being owned by state development bank VEB.

Update:
US economic sanctions hit Russian top flight side CSKA Moscow

The United States and its allies are coordinating new sanctions on Russia after Moscow recognised two regions in eastern Ukraine as independent with details starting to emerge on the steps taken or planned by the United States, European Union, Britain and other Western powers.

The soccer world too is calling for measures to be taken as a response to the Kremlin's actions with many calling for UEFA to strip Russian city Saint Petersburg as host venue for the 2022 Champions League in May.

The Polish FA (PZPN) have also sought clarity from global soccer governing body FIFA on the national team's World Cup playoff against Russia in Moscow next month, after Russia ordered troops into breakaway regions of Ukraine.

"The Polish FA has asked FIFA to urgently clarify the issues related to the organisation of the match," the PZPN said in a statement, adding it hoped to provide players with optimal conditions to prepare for and play international games.

CSKA Moscow impacted by US sanctions

Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow appeared on a sanctions list issued by the US Treasury on Tuesday. The club appeared along with a series of Russian individuals and organizations who would be subjected to sanctions following Vladimir Putin's declaring of both the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as "independent".

The sanctions will indirectly impact on CSKA as state development bank VEB is the owner of CSKA's holding company with both the names of VEB and PFC CSKA appearing on the Treasury's SDN list.

US President Joe Biden added that more sanctions would be implemented in the instance that Russia launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Treasury Department added: "All assets under US jurisdiction will be immediately frozen and US individuals and entities are prohibited from doing business." A senior US administration official added that Sberbank and VTB Bank would face sanctions if the Russian invasion proceeds.
