U.S. Soccer confirms Russia boycott ahead of FIFA-UEFA ban

The United States on Monday joined the list of countries that have refused to play against Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine, before FIFA and UEFA later responded to growing pressure to suspend the country.

This includes any potential matches for the USMNT and USWNT

“The U.S. Soccer Federation stands united with the people of Ukraine and is unequivocal in our denunciation of the heinous and inhumane invasion by Russia,” the body said in a statement. “We will neither tarnish our global game, nor dishonor Ukraine, by taking the same field as Russia, no matter the level of competition or circumstance, until freedom and peace have been restored.

Other countries that had officially confirmed their refusal to play against Russia are: England, Poland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland. Later on Monday, FIFA and UEFA announced that Russian club and national teams have been suspended from official competitions, including the Europa League and World Cup.

FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” a joint statement from FIFA and UEFA said.
