VfL Wolfsburg confirms that John Brooks will leave in the summer

John Brooks will say farewell to VfL Wolfsburg at the end of the season after five years in the Bundesliga. The defender has made 21 league appearances, 19 as a starter, so far this season and provided one assist. But in the past three years Brooks has been dealing with several injuries and the club has decided not to extend his contract.

I’d like to thank the VfL Wolfsburg management for their honest discussions, but I’ve decided to take on a new challenge once again. I’ve had the opportunity to play football at a high level for five years and it’s obviously not easy for me to leave after such a long time. I wish the team and the entire club all the best and will give my all for VfL until my last game,” Brooks said in a statement.

What is next for Brooks?

Brooks has been the most consistent and experienced American center back in Europe for the past five years, but has adopted a secondary role with the USMNT under coach Gregg Berhalter. The 29-year-old had poor performances in the last World Cup qualifying games and Berhalter has opted to start Walker Zimmerman instead.

Brooks could sign as a free agent with another club in Europe or return to Major League Soccer. So far, only Chicago Fire has shown real interest in signing him in the summer, but he will wait to see if another offer comes in the upcoming months.
