Not even the trustworthy bat of the “Hispanic Titanic” Ivan Melendez’s electric bat could resucitate the Texas Longhorns, who were swept in a doubleheader by the South Carolina Gamecocks.

In Game 1, the Longhorns jumped on top in the first with a solo shot from Eric Kennedy, but just could not stop the hemorrhage of runs as they gave up a run in the first, two unearned in the fourth and a game-sealer in the fifth.

Game 2 saw Melendez launch a shot 493 feet, bouncing it off the box office in center field to give Texas an early lead. But far from being a shot that shook Gamecocks pitcher Matthew Becker, it turned out to be the only hit he allowed all day.

South Carolina put together a big inning in the fourth, scoring five runs to take a 6-1 lead and Texas was unable to get back into it. South Carolina scored three more in the sixth and Texas did likewise in the ninth but were unable to come back as they lost 9-4.

Splitting another double header was enough to see Ole Miss move into the top spot in this week’s poll. Oxford, Mississippi’s Swayze Field saw the Rebels take the first game in a tight contest against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 6-2 and then drop a home run derby-like second game 8-4.

Texas will now continue their tour of the low country with a game against the College of Charleston and a visit to the Citadel.

Ole Miss will head down the road to Hammond, Louisiana, for a Tuesday matchup with Southeastern Louisiana before a three game series in Auburn over the weekend.
