It’s free agency season again at the NFL, and it’s the perfect time for players who are no longer contract-bound to seek greener pastures, bigger contracts, and a better team fit.

The free agency period coincides with the start of the new league year, when agreements from the previous season run out.

More experience, more money

Free agents can formally sign new contracts, and previously discussed trades can finally become official. There are certain guidelines to be followed when signing on a free agent.

The minimum salary that he can receive is dependent on what is called a credited season (CS). For a player to earn a credited season, he must have been on full-pay status for three or more games in the regular season.

The more seasons credited, the higher the minimum salary he is due. Here is the minimum pay depending on the CS.

CS-based Minimum salary for 2022

0 CS$705,000
1 CS$825,000
2 CS$895,000
3 CS$965,000
4-6 CS$1,035,000
7+ CS$1,120,000

NFL players: Short career spans

There is no maximum length for a contract in the NFL. However, because the average life span of the career of a professional football player is only about three and a half years, there are a lot of contracts drawn that are in this ballpark. Very few players land a ten-year agreement like that of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Longer contracts can benefit both sides- a player will be guaranteed some medium-term income, while the team will be able to keep its hold on a player that could potentially play at a high level for years.

However, a shorter contract gives a player a chance to enter free agency if he is not happy with his team. It would also give teams a chance to release some players who are injury-prone or simply not performing as expected.
