The Cinderella story continues for Saint Peter’s as they managed a 70-60 upset win over seventh-seeded Murray State in the second round, sending them to the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16.

The Peacocks earned their first-ever win in March Madness on Thursday, stunning heavy favorite Kentucky to become only the 10th fifteenth-seed to earn a victory in the history of the competition.

Third in NCAA history

They continued their winning ways and became only the third No. 15 seed ever to advance to the Sweet 16 round. The first to achieve the feat was Florida Gulf Coast in 2013, followed by Oral Roberts who did it just last year.

Other NCAA stories:

Senior KC Ndefo was in the forefront of Saint Peter’s campaign, delivering 17 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks, and one steal. Junior guard Doug Edert, who tallied 20 points against Kentucky, contributed 13 points this time.

The Peacocks were the superior all-around team throughout the game, limiting Murray State to a mere 34.6 shooting percentage. They never gave up the lead, and won in rebounds, 38-31.

Men on a mission

Coach Shaheen Holloway was understandably proud of his team. “Kudos to these guys. They deserve it,” he said.

Holloway said that even as doubters didn’t believe they could deliver, his team came to the tournament on a mission. He said they have heart, and that it’s the only thing that matters.

Saint Peter’s can be found in Jersey City, New Jersey. It’s a small, private Jesuit university, which has one of the smallest budgets for a basketball program among all those competing in the tournament.

Saint Peter’s will go up against either Purdue or Texas, who will do battle on Sunday.
