GOLDEN GLOBES 2024
2024 Golden Globes: How much money is Jo Koy paid for hosting?
The comedian will be hosting the event for the first time. According to some, hosting the Golden Globes is quite a lucrative gig.
The Golden Globes is back, the 81st edition of the awards gala takes place tonight in Beverly Hills, where the top movies, television series and streaming platforms as well as the best actors/actrices and other areas of the industry are recognized for their achievements of the past year.
The master of ceremonies this year is Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy, who himself had an eventful 2023 which included a sell-out 55-date US tour, following on from his box office smash Easter Sunday, which exceeded all expectations by grossing $13 million since its release as well as and his recent Netflix special, Jo Koy.
He takes the baton from Jerrod Carmichael, who let slip how much he was being paid for hosting last year’s ceremony. During his opening monologue, he explained: “I’m here because I’m black. I’ll tell you how I got here. I got a phone call from my man Stephen Hill, great producer. One minute you’re making tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the black face of an embattled, white organization... So I did what I do when I have a moral, racial dilemma - I called the homegirl Avery. She said, ‘Ooh, bookie, I’m so proud of you, how much are they paying you?’ And I said, ‘$500,000′. And she said, ‘Boy, if you don’t put on a good suit and take some white people money…'”
Golden Globe hosting fees
Carmichael’s fee was reported to be higher than the usual amount given to host the event. In October 2013, it was rumored that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would receive $4 million each to host the gala - double what Anne Hathaway and Seth MacFarlane allegedly had earned for hosting the Oscars a couple of years previously. Those figures were refuted however by Fey and Poehler’s agents, who told Vanity Fair “the figure that Radar has printed is grossly exaggerated.” Generally, hosting fees are around the low six figure-mark.
While the Academy Awards undoubtedly command more prestige, the Golden Globes appear to be more generous when it comes to paying hosts. A decade ago, the average hosting fee for the Oscars was $15,000 to $25,000, according to The Hollywood Reporter and apparently, pay hasn’t increased very much since then…
