A new ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel movie is reportedly being fast-tracked at HBO

The new prequel will follow the events of Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros.

Update:
The new prequel will follow the events of Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros

Although it’s been nearly four years since the series finale of the hit HBO fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones’ based on the novels by author George R.R. Martin, the network refuses to let excitement for the franchise die.

While fans wait for season two of the prequel series ‘House of the Dragon’ to air sometime next year, a new prequel movie is reportedly in the works. It’s still in its earliest stages of development, but sources have said it’s being fast-tracked.

What would the new prequel movie be about?

The new prequel movie will cover the events of Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros, when Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys use their army and dragons to conquer and unite six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, excluding Dorne.

Aegon becomes the first king of Westeros to sit on the Iron Throne.

The events take place approximately 130 years before ‘House of the Dragon’, making the prospective movie a prequel of a prequel, and taking place roughly 300 years before the events of the main series ‘Game of Thrones’.

According to Variety’s sources, HBO will soon begin the search for a writer to tackle the project, and while the sources say that HBO is eager to get the movie into production ASAP, it still hasn’t been formally greenlit.

A number of ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoffs have been considered

HBO has been eager to replicate the success of ‘Game of Thrones’. Several series and other spinoffs have been announced or loosely spoken about since the main series ended, from a series about Kit Harrington’s character Jon Snow, a series set in Flea Bottom, which was canceled, to another about Princess Nymeria, the warrior-queen who founded Dorne, prospectively called ‘10,000 Ships’.

Another scrapped series was called ‘Bloodmoon’ and took place 5,000 years before the events of the main series and chronicled the Long Night. It was rejected the same day that ‘House of the Dragon’ was greenlit.

A series that follows Martin’s ‘Dunk and Egg’ novellas was then proposed, as well as an animated series for HBO Max.

With the number of stories available, thanks to the creative power of George R.R. Martin, HBO appears to be aiming to house a franchise universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
