Various outlets, citing a copy of his autopsy report, say that the musician died from drowning and the effects of difluoroethane, a flammable gas that is used as the propellant in cans of compressed air, as well as alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax.

His death has been ruled accidental.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s report also states that Carter was found submerged in the bathtub after inhaling the compressed gas and intake of alprazolam.

Nick paid tribute to his brother after his passing

Following Aaron’s passing, his brother, Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys, shared a touching tribute on Instagram.

“Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday, want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed,” wrote Nick.

“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you, Chizz. Now you can finally have the peace you could never find here on earth….I love you, baby brother.”

Carter rose to fame as an opener for the Backstreet Boys in 1997, later signing a record contract.

He released his debut studio album when he was nine, which featured the hit track ‘Crush on You’. His second album, ‘Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It)’, was released in 2000 and featured hits like ‘That’s How I Beat Shaq’, and ‘I Want Candy’.

From there, he went on to be the opening act for Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. In total, he released six albums, the latest being ‘Blacklisted’, which was released in 2022.
