Andrew Tate released from Romanian jail and placed under house arrest
The influencer and his brother are to be released from jail after suspicions of human trafficking
The controversial influencer and ex-kickboxer Andrew Tate is being released from a Romanian Jail on Friday and placed on house arrest. His brother Tristian and their two Romanian associates are also to be released conditionally.
The Court of Appeal in Bucharest ruled that Tate, his brother Tristian, and their two associates, Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu, can be taken out of custody and placed under house arrest. A spokesperson for Tate confirmed to Insider News that the brothers were ‘ecstatic’ about the news.
The ruling comes after Tate and his company spent months in detention as Romanian authorities carried out a human trafficking investigation into the four of them.
Tate’s request
On March 14, Tate’s request for bail was denied by a judge who cited that Tate posed a potential flight risk, as well as concerns for witness tampering. Tate was initially arrested in December 2022 and his detention was extended multiple times into the end of March.
No official charges have been filed yet by Romanian prosecutors and the four individuals detained have denied any wrongdoing.
Ecstatic over the news
“We are ecstatic to announce the Romanian judicial system approved Andrew’s and Tristan Tate’s appeal against last week’s extension decision,” the Tates’ spokesperson told Insider in a statement.
They continued, “Both brothers are looking forward to being reunited with their families in Romania and want to extend their thanks to all the supporters who have stood by them during this time. They will continue to fight to clear their name of these fabricated accusations; however, this is a big step in the right direction.”
Lobbying and de-platformed
In late February, Reuters reported that leaked tapes revealed that Tate organized calls to right-leaning Romanian politics to lobby for his release and discredit accusers.
Prior to his arrest, Tate was de-platformed from Facebook, Youtube, Tiktok, and Instagram. He had also been banned from Twitter for violating terms after posting tweets claiming women bear the responsibility of sexual assault.
However, Tate was allowed to return to the platform after Elon Musk took over ownership in January 2023. Shortly after he feuded with climate activist Greta Thunberg, which led to rumors that his interaction with Thunberg allowed the Romanian police to acquire his location allowing for his arrest.
