‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ now fourth highest-grossing movie of all time

Director James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ keeps moving up the list of highest-grossing movies of all time, earning $2.075 billion at the worldwide box office.

Update:
Director James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ keeps moving up the list of highest-grossing movies of all time, earning $2.075 billion.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is now the fourth-highest grossing movie ever, after the movie surpassed $2.075 billion at the box office.

James Cameron is now behind three of the top five highest grossing movies ever. Cameron both directed and co-wrote the latest ‘Avatar’ picture, alongside writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ surpassed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to secure its spot on the list. Upon its release in 2015, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earned a comparable $2.064 billion total, but it wasn’t enough to keep it in the top four.

The ‘Avatar’ sequel, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, has been nominated for four Oscar Academy awards, including Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Production Design.

Top 5 highest grossing movies

The highest-grossing movie of all time remains the original ‘Avatar’ at $2.92 billion gross income, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’, $2.79 billion, coming in second. Third on the list is ‘Titanic’, also by James Cameron, raking in $2.19 billion. ‘Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ now sits in fifth position with $2.064 billion.

‘Avatar’ - $2.92 billion

‘Avengers: Endgame’ - $2.79 billion

‘Titanic’ - $2.19 billion

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ - $2.075 billion

‘Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ - $2.064 billion

‘’Avatar: The Way of Water’ was a hit with international audiences as well, grossing $1.46 billion globally. Domestically, it ranks as the 12th-highest grossing film but could soon pass ‘Incredibles 2′ ($608 million) and ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ ($620 million).

The cost of ‘Avatar’

The claim to fame didn’t come cheaply for Cameron, as reportedly his movies come with big budgets. Most filmmakers might make a profit out of such a large amount of ticket sales, but most of that goes back into paying for production when it comes to Cameron.

Variety reported that due to the development of new technology to shoot motion-capture scenes under water, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ needed to earn $1.5 billion to break even.

Cameron is also hoping to turn ‘Avatar’ into a five-film series that will explore a multi-generational family saga, so fans can expect to have a lot more ‘Avatar’ screen time in the coming years.
