Bad Bunny has had a highly successful 2023. He was the first artist to give an all-Spanish language opening performance at this year’s Grammy Awards, won Best Música Urbana Album at the show, and became the first Latino to win an IFPI award.

Next month, the artist is set to perform at Coachella for the second time in his career, headlining the show for the first time, and again, becoming the first Latino to do so.

He is joined by fellow headliners K-pop girl group BLACKPINK and R&B artist Frank Ocean, making this year’s Coachella festival the first time the festival is headlined by all non-white artists.

He’s unfazed by Coachella

In his Time Magazine interview, which is also the first Spanish language interview for the magazine, Bad Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, opened up about how he felt about his impending shows.

“Am I supposed to feel something?” he responded when asked about how he felt about the occasion.

“I performed at Azteca [Stadium in Mexico City]. I performed at Yankee Stadium. I’ve performed every place. Coachella is going to be another f–king performance to me,” he said.

“I felt more pressure at the Hiram Bithorn [Stadium in Puerto Rico] than I feel for Coachella. Obviously, I’m excited. I want to do my best.”

He reiterated that he feels no pressure to compete with other performers, and feels more inclined to be himself while on stage.

“There’s a lot of megastars that have performed at Coachella before so I don’t want to compete with any of them. I just want to be myself,” he explained.

He continued, “A lot of legends have performed at Coachella but no one like me. There’s never been a Benito performing at Coachella. And that’s the cool thing for me.

For Bad Bunny, the most important thing is that his fans have a good time and feel like they’re just chilling with friends.

“I want the people to feel free like it’s not Coachella—we’re in the barrio [town], on the beach,” he said.

At Coachella, there’s never been someone from where I come from. There hasn’t been anyone that will bring what I bring. I want people to not feel pressure or responsibility. We’re going to enjoy where we are now because we don’t know where we’re going.”

Bad Bunny is set to perform at the 2023 Coachella Music Festival on April 14 and 21. Festival passes can be purchased at coachella.com
