Brendan Fraser wins the 2023 Best Actor Oscar award
The award goes to Brendan Fraser for his role in the film The Whale directed by Darren Aronofsky
Brendan Fraser has won the Best Actor Oscar award for his role as Charlie in ‘The Whale’.
The 54-year-old beat out the likes of Austin Butler, who was nominated for his work as Elvis Presley in ‘Elvis’, Colin Farrell as Pádraic Súilleabháin in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, Paul Mescal as Calum Paterson in ‘Aftersun’ and Bill Nighy as Mr. Rodney Williams in ‘Living’.
For the first time since the 7th Academy Awards, 88 years ago, all of the Best Actor nominees were first-timers.
Fraser’s win comes after Butler took home honors at the Drama Golden Globe and the BAFTA’s, while Fraser won at the Critics Choice and the SAG Award.
He also becomes the first actor to take home the honor without a Best Picture nod since Jeff Bridges did so in 2009 for ‘Crazy Heart’.
After starring in movies like ‘George of the Jungle’ and ‘The Mummy Trilogy’, Fraser’s film work slowed down in the late 2000s and mid 2010s.
He returned to the fold with television roles in ‘Texas Rising’, ‘The Affair’ and ‘Doom Patrol’. However, it was his work in ‘No Sudden Move’, and more recently, ‘The Whale’, that revitalized his film career, with the latter helping him win a Critics Choice and SAG Award, and now, an Oscar.
