Charlize Theron calls out anti-drag laws, threatens those who uphold them

Charlize Theron expressed her views during the ‘Drag Isn’t Dangerous’ telethon.

Charlize Theron was a guest during the ‘Drag Isn’t Dangerous’ telethon that was live-streamed last Sunday, May 7, an event that raised money in support of drag performers and also for LGBTQ+ causes.

During her appearance, the actress had some strong words for lawmakers who have been creating anti-drag laws, banning people from performing or viewing “adult cabaret performance on public property”.

“We love you queens. We’re in your corner and we’ve got you, and I will f— anybody up who’s trying to f— with anything with you guys,” Theron said.

“There are so many things that are hurting and, really, killing our kids, and we all know what I’m talking about right now and it ain’t no drag queen.

“If you’ve ever seen a drag queen lip-sync for her life, it only makes you happier, it only makes you love more, it makes you a better person,” she continued, before adding:

“Please support all the great organizations that are out there helping all of this nonsense go away like it should. All of these incredibly stupid policies. Bye! No more room for hate, only love, and love equals drag queens!

The event ended up raising over $500,000 in donations, with pre-telethon donations coming in at $100,000.

Other celebrities who participated in the event

Theron was joined by a number of other celebs, including Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Schumer, Leslie Jones, David Cross, Amber Tamblyn, Whitney Cummings, Marcia Gay Harden, and Sarah Silverman.

Drag performers at the event included Trixie Mattel, Bob the Drag Queen, Trinity the Tuck, Monét X Change, and Eureka O’Hara.

The event came about in response to anti-drag bills that have been introduced in many states, including Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas.

“The recent demonization of drag culture has been greatly upsetting and completely shocking to me. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many drag performers, including one of my idols, the incomparable Trixie Mattel, over the past several years,” Eisenberg said ahead of the event.

“Drag artists represent joy, creativity and celebrate the many wonderful ways to be in our society. To attribute anything else to them is appalling and dangerous,” he added.
