Although she’s a successful artist and actress, Chloe Bailey recently talked about how her confidence fades when she’s out of the public eye.

Before she became a solo artist, Chloe began her rise to fame alongside her sister Halle in their group, Chloe x Halle.

Since releasing her debut solo single “Have Mercy” in 2021 the rising star has faced constant hate and criticism for her looks, how she dresses, and how she carries herself.

“I never understood it. I’d look at my peers and be like, ‘We’re all the same age. They’re showing as much as me, if not more,” Bailey told PEOPLE in a recent interview. “But if I do it, I’m ridiculed to the max,”

As much as I would see it and try to act like it didn’t affect or bother me, it would. I was starting to believe the lies that the trolls were saying online, and I started to look down on myself even more than what I already was doing with my own insecurities,”

After taking a break from social media and learning to love herself Bailey explained that she’s “been good, once I ignored it.”

Chloe’s busy release schedule

Despite her struggles with critics, Bailey is keeping busy with her upcoming projects. On the music side of her career her debut album ‘In Pieces’, comes out this Friday, March 31.

When asked about what fans can expect from her album Bailey explained to PEOPLE that she just wanted to be honest about the concept of heartbreak in life.

“I was really vulnerable, and I was like, ‘This project’s going to be about all types of heartbreak’” Bailey said. “Not just with a romantic partner, but heartbreak with family and friends that you trusted and thought would always be there for you,”

“Heartbreak within yourself when it’s hard to look in the mirror and tell yourself, ‘I love you,’ because you haven’t found that self-love yet.”

Her sister the Little Mermaid

While Chloe is busy with her upcoming music her sister is also venturing into new places in her career since the duo split. Halle Bailey is set to star in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”

The remake is expected to depict the same plot as the original film from 1989, which follows the adventurous mermaid, Ariel (Halle Bailey), who is fascinated by humans. After falling in love with a human Prince (Jonah Haur-King), Ariel makes a harrowing deal with the sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy).

Alongside Bailey, the cast also features other big stars such as Simone Ashley, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, Jessica Alexander, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, and more.

“The Little Mermaid” will be in theaters on May 26.
