Cobie Smulders teases a darker MCU in ‘Secret Invasion’
Smulders tells fans what they can expect from the new series.
The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the upcoming miniseries ‘Secret Invasion’. This new show features Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as the main protagonist as he learns that Earth is secretly being invaded by the shapeshifting Skrulls.
Cobie Smulders, who plays Maria Hill, Fury’s right-hand woman, teases that the series will take the MCU in a much darker direction.
“This series is much more dark in tone than ones previous. It’s hard to know who to trust,” Smulders told People Magazine.
“‘Secret Invasion’ shows us insight into the lives of agents working to keep Earth and its inhabitants safe. Now, there is a major discovery of the Skrulls. Maria has been trying to get Nick Fury back to Earth to help with a multitude of problems but when the Skrulls become public knowledge, it finally gets his attention.”
While some fans have criticized Marvel’s decision to integrate television shows into the MCU, Smulders thinks it’s a great opportunity to further explore characters and their relationships.
Smulders on Maria Hill
Smulders’ made her MCU debut in 2012′s ‘The Avengers’. Since then, she’s starred in a total of 10 Marvel projects including ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’
Her last appearance as Maria Hill was in 2019′s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. However, it was revealed that the Maria we see in the movie was a Skrull.
“So the audience is in the dark as to what she has been up to,” Smulders went on. “I’d like to think that she’s been sipping Mai Tais on vacation somewhere after coming back from the Blip but most likely, she has been working on a mountain of backlogged issues.”

Alongside Jackson and Smulders, the cast includes Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Coleman, Martin Freeman, Killian Scott, Noel Fisher, Don Cheadle, Christopher McDonald, Charlayne Woodard, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dermot Mulroney, Carmen Ejogo and Katie Finneran.
‘Secret Invasion’ premieres on Disney+ on June 21, 2023.
