The music world mourns the loss of the famous Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter Coco Lee, who died at the age of 48 on Wednesday, her family announced.

Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, revealed the sad news on Facebook, saying that the celebrity had attempted to take her own life at home on Sunday.

The first Mandopop superstar in the US, who had been diagnosed with depression some years ago, was immediately taken to the hospital, but she had been in a coma since then.

“With great sadness, we are here to break the most devastating news: Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months”, the post says.

“Although Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” her sisters wrote.

Coco’s family also showed their gratitude to the healthcare staff for their efforts to save her life and all the support received from the fans.

“Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for this poor old lady & allow us time and privacy in healing”, the statement added.

Coco Lee, the ‘Asian Mariah Carey’

Born Ferren Lee, she started her Mandopop career when she was 19 in 1994 with her debut album, Love From Now On, in Taiwan. Considered the ‘Asian Mariah Carey’, Coco Lee got started getting visibility after winning the fourth season of the Chinese reality show, I Am A Singer, in 2016.

“We hope that everyone will not only miss Coco, but also share her bright smile, treat everyone with sincerity, kindness, and love, and continue her wish to let everyone around feel her love and happiness,” they said.

Lee released over 15 albums, garnering tens of millions in sales. She was also known for performing the theme songs of Disney movie Mulan and Lee Ang’s Wuxia production Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
