David and Victoria Beckham break silence on infidelity rumours in new Netflix documentary
Speaking in the new Netlfix documentary BECKHAM, David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, discussed the 2004 claims of extramarital affairs made against the former soccer star.
For the first time since the scandal broke two decades ago, David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, have opened up about the rumours of infidelity that rocked their marriage early in the ex-soccer star’s four-year spell at Real Madrid.
In 2004, the year after Beckham’s move to the Spanish club, the model Sarah Marbeck and his former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, both claimed in the UK tabloids that they had had affairs with the then-England captain.
Beckham released a statement denying the allegations at the time, but he and Victoria had never previously sat down to be interviewed about the controversy.
“There were some horrible stories”
Speaking in the final episode of BECKHAM, a new, four-part documentary on his life and career, the former midfielder, 48, said: “There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with.
“It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage.”
Victoria opens up on “nightmare”
Recalling the “nightmare” of the media “circus” they faced during Beckham’s stint in Spain, Victoria revealed: “100% it was the hardest period for us, because it felt like the world was against us.
“And here’s the thing: we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest.
“Up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else, but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad.”
She added: “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was, and how it affected me.”
“Victoria’s everything to me”
Looking back on the scandal, Beckham concluded: “I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty. Victoria’s everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult.
“But we’re fighters. And at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for.”
BECKHAM is out now on the streaming platform Netflix.
